Collaboration is the key to strong schools
May 15, 2012: Seeing hundreds of students, parents, teachers, school board representatives and community members march to Pioneer Courthouse Square on May 11 in support of adequate state school funding was an affirming example of how our community can come together for our students and our future.
So is the tentative agreement that the city of Portland, Portland Public Schools and the Portland Association of Teachers forged and that PAT and the school board have ratified. If the City Council approves the agreement May 30, we will have spared 110 teaching jobs and maintained a full school year.
Thank you, Mayor Sam Adams and the City Council for viewing the health of our schools as a citywide issue. Thank you all for working hard to forge a solution.
Our values as a school district and as a community are clear: Our students come first. I look forward to continued engagement with our state legislators as we work with them toward a long-term solution to adequate school funding in Oregon
