Last week we went to the aquarium. The aquarium was the new Portland Aquarium. I got to touch a shark, stingray, bat ray, and a yellow fish. We got to see the longest living octopus and that octopus was the smartest. There was a fake pirate there too. We got to see jellyfish also. A stingray splashed water all over me. We got to see like 58 different types of fish. They are making a section for otters and puffins. There was a lot of birds and next to that was a huge jungle gym. The class had a great time. The best part was feeding the rays and sharks though.

Last week was Celebrate Reading Week. On Monday Miss Habiba told us Anansi stories. Anansi is a spider who is usually lazy. Sometimes Anansi is active. On Tuesday we had pajama day. It was very exciting! On Wednesday we decorated and made our float. Then we had Author’s Tea. It was very fun. We all had cookies and milk. The principal shared kid stories with us. On Friday we had a big parade. Almost everyone wore costumes. It started to rain half way through the parade. I got to hold the WELCOME TO ANTARTICA sign. It was Graham’s wagon. The wagon was very cool after it was painted. I thought it was nice of Graham to let us borrow the wagon. The parade was very fun.

The tadpoles we have are developing. A few of them are froglets. Some of them are still tadpoles though. The froglets are eating fruit flies right now. Some are climbing on the walls in the tank. They are fun to watch.

Last week we had a Tree Lady (Teacher Joan) the one who taught us how to make paper come visit us again. This time we went to Woodstock Park and had a tree scavenger hunt. The Tree Lady taught us what types of trees there are. She was nice and it was fun to learn all about the different trees.
Do you spy the nest we found in this Birch Tree?

One month ago we got a cluster of Pacific Tree Frog eggs. They have already hatched and are tadpoles. Some are still babies and some are getting bigger. We have a small aquarium for the tadpoles. We feed them everyday. They’re fun to look at. We take good care of the tadpoles. I think there are 9 or 10 of them in there. We clean the tank every once in a while too. Once we see their life cycle we have to release them. It is fun watching them grow.

Three days ago was our last dance with Ms. Habiba. Most of the class was bummed out because people liked dancing with Ms. Habiba. We worked pretty hard. We learned the rest of the African Dance. The dance comes from the continent of Africa. Ms. Habiba is very nice. She showed us good exercises for our body as well.

On Monday Room 4 went to Reed College. They had a lot of pictures from the Civil War. There were a lot of pictures of ships, mountains, and forts. After that we drew pictures to practice our skills with pencils. Then we went back to school. It was a very fun field trip. My favorite part was looking at all of the cool pictures.

Yesterday was Valentine’s. I thought it was pretty wild. I had a good time. I got (I think) 5 pieces of candy and a lot of Valentine’s. We had a party and stations. We made tic-tac-toe boards and wax paper and crayon hearts. We made these cool bouncy balls out of this yucky stuff that was really messy. We also had delicious snacks. Today I brought my Valentine’s and passed them out to the students.

Two days ago we had a nice person teach us about wetlands. Her name was Lynn. She was from the City of Portland. She told us stories about wetlands and how important they are. She taught us about types of trees. After she left we drew pictures of a healthy and an unhealthy Johnson Creek. I had a good time.

This week we worked on making spider webs. We made spider webs and put all the compound words we knew in the spider web. I came up with pinball and skeeball. After we came up with all the compound words we could think of we wrote them on our spider webs. Then we highlighted the words with sharpie or a special type of pen. After that we made spiders. It was pretty hard and confusing at times. I finished my spider!
