May, 2013

Meleah Carlson loves her AP English class. "It's just a really good group of people, and the teacher is really great," she says. In her spare time, Meleah does tribal bellydance. Last year she did a student exchange in India, a trip that informed her interest in studying either anthropology or education at the collegiate level next year. "I'm just really interested in learning about different cultures—how they're different; how they're similar," she says. Meleah is thinking of attending Whitman College.

Aliyyah Howes is really enjoying her English senior semester seminar, "The Sixties," currently learning about the women's rights movement. "And I always like German," she adds. Last year, she was a state officer for DECA, a high school marketing association, but it was cut from the Wilson curriculum this year. Next year, Aliyyah will attend Reed College. She has worked all through high school.

Molly Michelotti aspires to be a high school Spanish teacher when she grows up, so it should come as no surprise that she loves her Spanish class. She is the Wilson senior class president, and is planning on taking a year off before college, first backpacking through Europe for about a month in late summer, and then embarking on a six-month mission program in Costa Rica. She has played basketball throughout high school, this year year playing post. "It was really fun; a good experience," she says. Molly is involved with Wilson's Younglife club and goes to Riversgate Church in Multnomah Village.

April, 2013

James Markin's favorite classes are AP World History and especially math. "We get work done, and we have a good time," he says. James is involved in track and takes piano lessons. On the weekends, he helps in the garden with Students for Environmental Action. This year he also did mock trial. He is still waiting to hear from colleges, but plans to study political science. "A lot of students are really book smart, but not necessarily hardworking all the time," James says, "so I try to be hardworking."

Taliesin Clements has always loved biology, planning to study biochemistry and molecular biology and make a career out of cognitive neuroscience. He is involved in Wilson's Gay-Straight Alliance and is a participant in Minds Matter of Portland, "a mentoring organization that takes kids who have good GPAs who are not very financially well-off and helps them get into college," Taliesin explains.

Matan Horenstein has loved developing his writing skills in AP English this year. "Another class that I have had such a privilege to take is leadership. I was chosen to be the Human Relations Director. I was so happy." Matan is also President of the Jewish Student Union at Wilson and citywide president of his youth group, NCSY. He has been to Israel many times, and helped organize a day camp for children who have witnessed terrorism. He is planning to take a gap year in Israel, studying abroad through Yeshiva University in New York.

March, 2013

Cleo Young is a senior and loves history, chemistry, and
English. She paddles for the Wilson Dragon Boat team and is a leader in the Wilson Students for
Environmental Action. Cleo is interested in anthropology, international studies, or environmental
science in college.

George Manac is a senior and likes advanced biology, advanced chemistry, and
Advanced Placement statistics. He is a competitive gymnast and volunteers at his church. George
plans to study biology at Oregon State University, and becoming a physician specializing in
dermatology.

Olivia Wallace is a senior and loves science and is taking an advanced chemistry class
at Reed College. She plays soccer and lacrosse, and plays percussion in the school band. Olivia
plans to study either chemistry or environmental science in college, ultimately becoming a psychiatrist
or a surgeon.

February, 2013

Sam Olsen
has a myriad of classes and activities keeping him busy and engaged
this year. His favorite classes are Biology and AP English. He is
president of Wilson's hiking club and serves as activities and athletics
advisor as a member of Student Leadership. Next year, he will attend
Western Washington University where he hopes to study philosophy,
science and writing, making some form of writing his vocation. “I am a
very self-driven person, whether it be my interests or the cynicism I
have reading things, or just the way I approach things is a little
different,” he says.

Carmen Alzaga-Elizondo describes herself as sarcastic, but
loving. Her favorite class is AP Photography. She plays soccer and does
dragon boats. She is involved with Wilson International Student Club and
Interact Club, both of which involve social service. Her future career
plans are not set in stone, but she says a desk job appeals to her,
perhaps in a ministry. Her advice to her fellow students: “Try your
hardest and don't give up.”

Michael Stock finds chemistry more interesting than anything
else he has studied. “There are a lot of real-world applications that it
can be used for; you know what it's used for when you're learning about
it,” he explains. Michael has been on Wilson's varsity basketball team
for two years, serving as point guard, shooting guard, and combo guard.
He plans to attend the University of Oregon, where he is considering
studying science or business. One of his friends describes him as a
“funny guy” who “brings an energy to the group.” His favorite class this
year is Ceramics.

The SW Community Connection highlights Wilson seniors for their academic excellence, achievement
and leadership. Thanks to Gifford Dentistry in Hillsdale for their sponsorship of the All-Stars.
