Last Friday, in the cafeteria, we started the Know your Roots challenge. This is a weekly challenge, designed to help students expand their vocabulary by studying words that stem from Latin and Greek roots, instead of tediously learning words one by one.

Students who participate in this challenge successfully (learn a prefix and the root of the week and use the words in their speech & writing) will get a treat/prize. Students who show more than a "mediocre" effort will be recognized at the end of every month and at the end of the semester (awarded a prize).

When: Friday lunch time in the Cafeteria

Where to find the words:

You can find the prefixes/ root words of the week in the student planner (behind the monthly calendar). They will also be put up on thebulletin board in the hallway & on the Root word tree in the cafeteria.

The root words for last weekwere "com" or con" = with or together. Some words that stem from these words are connect, community, and compress.

The root word for this week is "cred"= believe. Some words that stem from this root are credible, credulous, credentials, and incredible.

Using these common words will bring camaraderie between the students, staff and parents while improving communication skills! If you have suggestions or questions please email jyotiraghu@yahoo.com

As a follow up to the Family Math night, parent Joel Shapiro has started a Math Problem of the Week to encourage students to use their math problem solving skills, in a fun way outside the classroom. NEW FEATURE! STUDENT SPOTLIGHT At YWLA, we want to take every opportunity to acknowledge students who demonstrate leadership. We are adding the Student Spotlight to share some of the wonderful ways we witness student leadership on a daily basis!

Charm– From Ms. Thompson: I asked my 8th grade history class to annotate some text I gave them. I asked if they understood, and most said yes, having had it in Ms. Tews’ class last year. Then, I noticed that Charm had either created or pulled out a sticky note that had 5 different color highlighter marks and next to each it said 'questions, connections, observations, main ideas, and inferences.' I was so thrilled that she had thought to get that out (or create it, I forgot to ask her which) that I borrowed it to show on the doc camera. I then put it up on the board and have since created an anchor chart for the wall to remind them what things they should be looking for when they annotate text. Charm needs to be given props!!

NaNa andLondon – From Ms. Stilwell: NaNa and London are amazing dance captains!!!

The Portland Council PTA clothing center at Marshall High School campus needs volunteers from our school on October 27th from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

We need 3 -5 people to assist the 50 or so students who will come to the clothing center on that day to receive new and gently used clothing donated for that purpose. Please contact Rhonda Henderson (503) 771-9887 if you can help. If we do not provide volunteers on our day those kids who show up will have to be sent home without being helped.

The clothing center has provided new and gently used clothing to over 700 students so far this year! Each school with a PTA that is part of Portland Council PTA is expected to send volunteers twice a year. If you are unable to volunteer Thursday we have a second assigned day on Monday, February 6.

The clothing center also has enormous need for donations. They are totally out of boys jeans in sizes 4 through 12. They also have no more warm coats to give out.  If you have any outgrown, unused clothing of ANY sort please drop them off at the school with a note. Uniforms will go in Tubman's clothes closet for our girls. Any clothing that cannot be used as part of the uniform will be taken to the PTA clothing center.

Thank you in advance.  Please contact Rhonda Henderson (503) 771-9887 if you can volunteer or if you have any questions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) applications have been sent home to many of our students through the forecasting and AVID identification process, but we don't want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to apply for next year's AVID classes.

AVID is a program for middle to upper middle students who have the potential to succeed in rigorous course work but need some additional support. It provides many first generation college-bound students the opportunity to learn critical thinking, organization, and note-taking skills through weekly tutorials, field trips, speakers, and college experiences.

The ideal AVID candidate should:

·         have a GPA of 2.0 to 3.5

·         come from an underrepresented group

·         be able to complete four-year university requirements prior to graduation

·         be a hard worker, collaborate with others, and have a positive attitude

While there is some flexibility in the entrance criteria, there is one element that must be present for admission into the AVID program: the student MUST have individual determination to succeed in school and in life.

If your student meets the qualifications and would like to be considered for admission into the AVID program, please have them pick up an application in the front office. Completed applications MUST BE returned no later than Wednesday, June 8, in order to accommodate the interview process.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to email me at dschlege@pps.net
