Nov. 13: End of Trimester 1 Soon

Submitted by Jan Manley on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 11:45am.

I wish you all well on this Veterans' Day whether honoring our vets or enjoyng extra family time. On Thursday, Nov. 13, students will bring home a "Science News" that reviews activities until winter break.

On the reverse side is a conference reminder. This is homework for students to get the bottom portion signed and returned by Monday, Nov. 16.

This seventh grade group shows great enthusiasm for science and is willing to tackle difficult math related tasks. They are somewhat weak in multiplying with decimals so we are practicing this. Some students need to brush up on multiplication tables. Durings labs the ability to do mental math is very helpful, especially as they go on to high school. The Foss Motion kit has arrived and includes numerous high interest physics activities such as the dot car and the zip line airplanes.

In January the curriculum switches to chemistry but additional physics topics will be studied in the spring. The "big elements test" is tentatively planned for Feb.12. They will have a study guide provided at the end of January so then you should see daily practice with flashcards at home (some of these sets have become family "heirlooms" and have been passed down from sibling to sibling!

Trimester 1Midterm Reports

All students have been given at least a comment on progress. Students at risk of falling below C or other students with specific concerns will also get a letter grade. On Oct. 16, students will have their "tracking sheet" updated with packet grades and test 1 grade. Graded packets 1-3 should be in their science folder for you to see by Friday, Oct. 16.

We just finished the introduction to motion and completed a motion lab: TP Roll Derby. Next is a unit on energy. You may see your child working on posters at home if they need extra time. In November we will do a large lab project which brings us up to Thanksgiving.

There were 4 days of field trips the week of Oct. 12 which disrupted the science classes so some students will have a little extra work at home to catch up.
