2011-2012 Sellwood Band

Welcome back students and parents to the 2011-2012 Band Program at Sellwood Middle School!  We are off to a great start so far.  The Advanced Band already performed beautifully at the beginning-of-school assembly Friday morning (Sept. 9).  Congratulations to all of the band members for an awesome performance on the 4th day of school.

Next up is the performance of last year's Jazz Band at the Sellwood BBQ on Thursday, Sept. 15.  We look forward to hearing this group one last time.

Jazz Band to Westmoreland Manor

The Jazz Band will have their first gig on Wednesday, November 30th.  They will be performing at the Westmoreland Manor at 2pm.  This will be a great community outreach trip where students can share their musical talents with the residents of the manor.

KBPS Holiday Recording

KBPS will be recording the Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz Bands for a Holiday Broadcast.  Recording sessions occur as follows:  

Jazz Band................Friday, December 2nd at 8am

Intermediate.............Friday, December 2nd during 1st period

Advanced.................Friday, December 2nd during 5th period

Tune in to KBPS (am 1450) on December 24th/25th to hear all PPS musical groups celebrating the holidays!

Broadcast will also be streaming on KBPS.am...download the Sellwood portion at this website.

Winter Concert

The Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz Bands will be having their Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 7th.  The program starts at 7pm in the Big Gym.  All students need to be in the band room no later than 6:30pm to warm up and tune.  Concert Attire is Black and White; Jazz Band members will wear the Red Polos and Black bottoms.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

 

 


St. John's Parade

Congratulations to the Marching Band and Dance Team for placing 2nd at the St. John's Parade on Saturday, May 14th.  They sounded and looked great!  Good Job!!

Cleveland Cluster Jazz Concert

Last night (Thursday, April 28th) the Sellwood Jazz Band participated in the annual Cleveland Cluster Jazz Concert at CHS.  Congratulations to all the members; they represented Sellwood very well.  Especially good job to all the soloists who played with style and energy!

Jazz Band performs at the Moreland Farmer's Market on Wednesday, May 11th.  This is the opening day of the market for the season.  Come and listen to them play at 3:30 to 4:15pm.

 

 


Spring Band Concert

The 2011 Band Spring Concert is Thursday, May 14th at 7pm.  All bands...Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz...are performing in the big gym.  We are anxious to share the music we've been working on for the past couple months.

Jazz Band performed at the Elder Place in NE Portland on Tuesday, February 15th.  They helped residents celebrate Black History Month and performed very well.  Good Job, Band!

All-City Honor Band

Congratulations to the following students for making the 2011 All-City Honor Band:   Conor Chapman, Taylor Griffin, Sawyer Hill, Kendall Kriska, Colton Lish, Kiran Bolsey, Margaret Gibson, Emma Hadley, Drew Niman, and Helen Sanderson.  They will represent Sellwood very well.  Rehearsals begin at Jackson Middle School on Wednesday, February 23rd.  Concert date is Wednesday, March 16 at 7:30pm ( Jackson Middle School). 

 


District Solo and Ensemble Festival

About twenty of our talented band students are participating in the 2011 District Solo & Ensemble Festival.  The event will be held at Grant High School on Saturday, February 26th.  Good luck to all who are performing.

KBPS Holiday Recording

Jazz and Advanced Bands will be recording for this year's KBPS Holiday "Greeting Card."  Recording sessions occur on Tuesday December 7th (Pearl Harbor Day) at 8am for Jazz and 2nd period for Advanced Band.  Tune in on Christmas Eve to KBPS and listen to all of PPS's bands and choirs.

Winter Band Concert

Good Job Advanced Band

Congrats to the Advanced Band for an awesome performance yesterday at the Sellwood 5K!  The band members were out there in the elements playing with energy and spirit.  It was a great way to kick off the event.

Jr.Rose Parade

The Intermediate and Advanced Bands will combine to form the Sellwood Marching Band this year.  They will march in the Jr. Rose Parade on Wednesday, June 9th.  We leave school at 10:40am and return after 3:00pm.  The parade (part of the Portland Rose Festival) starts at 1pm, and the route is on NE Sandy Blvd. from NE 52nd to NE 40th Avenues.

Duniway Parade

The Sellwood Marching Band is once again participating in the Duniway Parade this year.  This annual event is on Friday, June 11th at 2:15pm.  The route goes up and down SE Reed College Pl. 

Spring Concert 2010

All Bands (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz) will be in concert on Thursday, May 13th.  Our Spring Concert starts at 7pm in the Big Gym.  All students need to meet in the band room no later than 6:30pm to warm-up and tune.  Concert Attire:  Black and White.   See you there!

MORE Jazz Gigs!

The month of May brings a couple gigs for the Jazz Band.  First they will be performing at the opening day of the Moreland Farmer's Market on Wednesday, May 12th.  The Jazz Band plays at 3:30pm at the corner of 13th and Bybee. 

The other gig is the Sustainability Faire/Garden Tour event on Sunday, May 23rd.  The Jazz Band will perform near the bike racks by the main parking lot at 11am.

The 2010 Sellwood Band CD is on sale now.  "Musical Excursions" features the Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz Bands.  CD's are on sale for only $10.00.  Get yours NOW!

Marching Band at the March for the ARTS

Both the Intermediate and Advanced Bands will combine to march in the upcoming March for the Arts on Wednesday, May 12th.  The event is during school, and all students need to wear their blue Sellwood marching shirts....Hope to see you on the parade route.

University of Portland Festival of Jazz

The Sellwood Jazz Band will be performing in this year's University of Portland Festival of Jazz.  The competition is on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.  Sellwood is scheduled to play at 4:15pm in the Chiles Stadium.  Good Luck Jazz Band!

Autism Walk-a Thon

The Advanced Band will be marching in the Autism Walk-a-thon for the second year in a row.  The walk/march will be on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Oaks Park.  It all begins at 10:30am.   Here's wishing for great marching weather!

Middle School Band Festival

The Advanced Band performs at the 2010 Middle School Band Festival on Thursday, April 22nd.  The event this year is held at Jackson Middle School, and Sellwood is scheduled to perform at 11:30am.  We will leave school at 9:50am and return after 2pm.

Cleveland Cluster Jazz Concert

The Jazz Band is performing on the evening of April 29th at the Cluster Jazz Concert.  The concert will be held at Hosford Middle School @ 2303 SE 28thPl.  Specifics times will be announced soon.

All-City Honor Band Concert

Nine of our talented band students will be participating in the 2010 All-City Honor Band Concert on Tuesday, March 16 at 7pm in the Benson High School Auditorium.  The following musicians will be representing Sellwood:  Haley McKinnon, Emma Hadley, Kate Barnes, Andy Miley, Francesco Verna-Ketel, Zach Armstrong, Gil Bolster, Brittany Johnson, and Logan Hillerns.  Congratulations to all of them, and GOOD LUCK in the concert!

Parade at St. Agatha School

 Advanced Band is invited to participate in St. Agatha School's yearly parade on Saturday, March 13th.  The march begins at 11am a few blocks north of Tacoma Av. on SE 15th.  Students need to meet at St. Agatha's no later than 10:20am to line-up, warm-up, and tune.  The uniform for this event:  blue marching shirts and blue jeans.

Solo/Ensemble Festival

A few of our band students will be participating at this year's PPS Solo and Ensemble Festival.  It will be held at Grant High School on Saturday,Feb. 27th. Sellwood's students will be performing from 9am to 10:45am.  Good luck to the following musicians:  Conor Chapman, Sean Henson, Daniel Gibson, Francesco Verna-Ketel, Savanah Fletcher, Clair Gardner, Tanna Kaul, Emma Hadley, Lisa Huang, Haley McKinnon, and Olivia Bles.

Jazz Celebration

CHS is hosting this year's Jazz Celebration. The Jazz Band will be performing that evening along with Cleveland and Beaumont's jazz bands. Also, the Portland Jazz Orchestra will be featured that night. The concert begins at 6:30pm on Friday, Jan. 22nd in the Cleveland High auditorium. Schools participating will earn funds through ticket sales. See ya there!

Jazz Band to Elder Place

The Jazz Band will be performing at the Elder Place Retirement in NE Portland. The performance is on Tuesday, Feb. 16th at 1:30pm. This is such a great opportunity for the group to connect with the community.

Jazz Band to Pioneer Square

The Jazz Band has its first out-of-school gig of the year on Wednesday, December 16th. They are performing at noon downtown at the Pioneer Courthouse Square for their "atmospheric" concerts. The set will include some holiday tunes and some jazz standards. We are hoping for dry weather!

Winter Concerts Coming...

The Beginning Band will be performing at the December 3rd Winter Concert (the marimba plays that evening,too). The performance starts at 7pm in the big gym. Students need to be in the band room no later than 6:30pm dressed in black and white to warm up and tune.

Jazz, Intermediate and Advanced Bands are performing at the December 10th Winter Concert in the big gym at 7pm. Students need to be in the band room no later than 6:30pm to warm up and tune. Concert attire: Black and White (splash of red and green for the holidays)

Moreland Monster March

The Advanced Band will be marching in the annual "Moreland Monster March" on Sunday, October 25th. The parade starts at 3pm at Llewelling Elementary and travels down Milwaukie avenue to Bybee. Students need to be at Llewelling no later than 2:15pm to line up, warm up and tune appropriately dressed in Halloween costume.

Grandparents/Special Friend Day

The Advanced Band will be performing at this year's Grandparents/Special Friend Day on October 23rd. They are in the process of preparing a piece called "Whale Warriors" which features a broad spectrum of musical moods. We look forward to welcoming guests to our school with this musical presentation.
