High School/IB Prep

Sellwood Middle School has a very strong academic program that not only fully prepares students to enter any high school of their choice, but also provides opportunities to earn high school credit while in middle school.

Our strengths are:
  • Mathematics For students who wish to take accelerated math classes, we offer Algebra A and B. Students who complete both levels earn one year of high school credit. In addition, Geometry is also offered and is equivalent to one year of high school credit. By taking these advanced courses in middle school, students who wish to enter the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in high school are fully prepared for higher level mathematics.
  • World Languages We offer a two-year Spanish program for seventh and eighth graders. One year of high school credit is awarded to those students who complete both years. This is especially important for students who want to graduate from high school with IB credits, which require five years of Spanish.
  • Science Our science program prepares students in lab work along with reading and writing in science content.
  • Social Studies Our teachers prepare students for the high school level Global Studies, Government and Economics, and History courses by teaching essential research skills, applied to essay and independent projects.
  • Art We have a wonderful art program that prepares our students with the critical thinking and production art skills needed to be well-rounded students. Advanced art students leave Sellwood Middle School well prepared to succeed in IB Art.
Across our entire curriculum, students are exposed to intensive writing and project work. We feel writing is a core skill and provide many opportunities for students to refine this skill. To help students develop their organizational and time management skills, many classes have project assignments, with teachers mentoring students step by step as needed.

What is IB?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous, internationally-recognized pre-university course of study that prepares its students for competitive college admissions and for the rigors of college level work.

The IB Program is offered at Cleveland High School.

IB students have the opportunity to earn a full IB Diploma, earn one or more IB Certificates in individual subject areas, or simply enroll in single IB classes. All Cleveland students may participate in the IB program.

The International Baccalaureate Organization was founded in the 1960s, resulting from an effort to establish a common curriculum and university entry credential for geographically mobile students. It is a chartered foundation under Swiss civil code with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
