Academics Overview
We start with an emphasis on the core classes: Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science. Within each of these areas, our teachers find ways to challenge all levels of students - using group projects, games and field study to help bring these subjects to life. For students seeking accelerated classes, our Math department offers high school-level algebra and geometry, which prepares students to enter International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement programs in high school.
These core classes are balanced by a rich set of electives - in fact we have one of the most varied offerings in the district for a middle school. Our students can choose Spanish, art, shop (industrial arts), concert band, marimba, PE, poetry, photo essay and media /technology. Spanish is one of our most popular electives, with a trip to Costa Rica, chaperoned by Sellwood Middle School staff, at the end of eighth grade. Eighth graders may also choose to participate in a trip to Washington DC.
Our academic program is rounded out with Outdoor School for sixth graders, a Talented and Gifted Program and Special Education.
