Why I Teach: I love music and I love kids! Teaching music to kids is the perfect combination.
What I Believe:
- All children have the ability, and the right, to learn to sing, to be rhythmic and to learn to read and write music.
- Children best learn musical concepts by singing, moving, playing instruments, listening to music and dancing. They need to have experiences visually, verbally, kinesthetically and tactilely in order to fully understand these concepts.
- I believe that music belongs to EVERYBODY and aim to give students the opportunity to enjoy making music while giving them new experiences with music.
My Favorite Things: I have 3 boys and a husband. I really love to spend time with my family. We like to watch movies, go hiking, do crafts, read books, play games, ride bikes and go swimming. My husband and I enjoy making music with friends.
How I help every student succeed: I am contributing toward Scott’s “big hairy audacious goal” in a few different ways. In music class, I teach children to read and write music, which helps reinforce concepts they are learning in reading. Music literacy is also very mathematical, especially rhythm. I share “singing” books with the students, giving students more opportunities to be read to, and provide the lyrics and music notation for the older kids to read from, providing more opportunities to practice reading skills.
Music is also a class that is meant to be joyful and fun, which refreshes the students for learning, and gives them another activity to look forward to at school.
