Writing a Friendly Letter
Lesson: Writing a friendly letter to a character in a novel
You’ve been reading a novel in your Language Arts class, and now I want you to write a friendly letter to one of the characters in the book.
Quasars: Seed Folks
Supernova: Romiette and Julio
Nebula: Star Girl
Crouser: Bridge to Terabithia
Ask questions about how the character is feeling or ask /discuss why they did what they did. Give advice if that makes sense. Explain how you would have done what the character did differently or the same way. Remember:
- Good letters explore an issue, idea, impression, or interpretation. They have a focused point.
- Good letters support their point by making direct references to the text.
- Good letters are written to explore an issue and leave room for response. The purpose is not to prove a point about the literary work but to question and think about it.
- Plan what you are going to write.
- Type up your ideas in Microsoft Word.
- Make sure your spelling is correct.
- Now click on the website written below. It will take you through the steps of writing a friendly letter and describe the parts that make up a letter.
- When you get to the part about the body of the letter, you can retype the letter you wrote in Word or copy and paste your text.
- Check to make sure that your letter is perfect. Spelling, punctuation and capitalization should be correct.
- Print your letter, sign it and then turn it in. You only get one chance to print, so check your letter first before printing.
