States and Capitals

Your job will be to create a U.S. States Database

Open Excel and create a spreadsheet that looks like this. Notice that in the first column you will be typing a number. Of course you'll go all the way to 50.

  State Capital
1
2

Now in Rows 2-51 type in the name of the state in column B and in column C type the state’s capital. To get the information you need, click on this site http://www.50states.com/us.htm. We’ll be adding more information at another time. Note: It doesn't matter in what order you type the state and it's capital. After you finish, save your work and now the fun begins. Go to this site and see how well you can do. Take this test a couple of times

Story of Stuff

Today we are starting a new project and I'm very excited about it. You will be viewing a video on YouTube and it's a class assignment. Wow. The catch is that you need to respond to the video as you view it. That means that as you watch it will be totally fine to pause the video and write. Keep doing this until you have answered all the question on the worksheet.

So the first thing is to download the worksheet. Save it right away in your file. Call it STUFF. Answer the first question and then start watching the video. Save the worksheet again before you leave the class. I'll be back tomorrow and I'll be all fired up to discuss your work with you. Please be the best students you can be. Make me proud!

Related to the Story of Stuff are websites that can give us more insights into what we buy and what we want to buy.

Bridges

Using the Design Cycle, you are going to tell me how you are going to build a bridge that is good enough to get you to the 8th Level of our bridge building simulation.

First of all you need to get an idea of what the challenge is going to be. So go here FWG Bridge 2 read the Instructions and then come back. It is now time to create your Design Brief. (create it in Word).

What is a design brief?
A design brief is a written document outlining, in complete detail, the objectives and corresponding design strategies for a design project. Among a number of other things, the most critical elements of a design brief are:

  • a complete description of the project—what is it that is trying to be done;
  • why is this needed now;
  • what outcomes are expected;
  • who is this being done for (the target audience);
  • and who are the key stakeholders in this project.

The design brief must also address

  • the competition,
  • time-line,
  • budget and
  • measurement of success.

Internet Reliability

I was driving home the other day and was listening to a story on NPR (National Public Radio) about the astrophysicist who is getting all these panicky calls from people about the end of the world. These calls most likely are coming for the release of the new movie "2012". Your job today is to research what you can find out about the importance of the year 2012. I need you to:

Locate 5 sites that address the issue of 2012.

Write a one paragrah summary of the article.

Who wrote the article for the website?

Find out where the aurthors got the information for the website.

Tell me why or why not you believe what's on the website.

Why are they traveling West? To get this information, use the following websites. Use your imagination and make a really creative Powerpoint.

Newton's Laws of Motion

Click on this site Newton's Laws of Motion and go through all the assignments.

When you get done, you should be able to answer all the questions on the quizz.

Copy and paste the quiz on to a page in Microsof Word.
