Our class is currently exploring an IB unit titled, Homes and Transportation Around the World. We are investigating how shelter and transportation reflect the geography of different locations around the world. Through books and mini-experiments, such as watching an “igloo” melt, students are discussing and wondering about the cause (the why) of the way homes and transportation are built and used (form and function). In our IB classroom we use the key concepts (form, function, connection, reflection, causation) to help us understand the central idea of what we are learning.
Students have also been busy creating lots of different types of homes with many different materials. They worked collaboratively to build homes and environments out of Legos and different types of blocks. They practiced using the IB Attitude - Cooperation. Students observed that building the homes were easier when they communicated and practiced being open minded to others’ ideas.
The next exciting IB unit is titled Caring For Our Planet and we will be learning about endangered animals from around the world and exploring what we can do at home to help make a difference. We already began our unit by watching a slide show from the internationally recognized photographer, Kevin Schafer, a grandparent of two Sabin students. Immediately following the presentation, students made connections about what they could do to help save the animals around the world by doing things such as talking about how we could raise money and they began saving paper and paper towels.
