The Sabin Wellness Committee is dedicated to continually improving the daily educational experience for all students of Sabin Elementary School. The Committee advocates for your child in many ways... One key component to the Wellness Committee's mission is lobbying for improved food choices in our schools and at home for our children.
A letter from Wellness Committee Chairperson, Megan Porter - 9/14/2009
The Wellness Council met on 11/2/09 and we are looking for volunteers to be Committee Leads or volunteers for committees.
Please review the below and email me with the area(s) that you would like to be a committee leader or be a part of the committee:
School Wellness Policies and Environment: work with the Site Council to support school policies that encourage using food as rewards/punishments, encouraging policies that promote healthy behaviors and enrichment activities.
Lead: Sabin-Megan Porter, ACCESS- need volunteer
Health Education: Supporting teachers to promote health education in all grades through curriculum and assignments, work with Garden Committee to help in integrating the school garden into the classroom, assist in finding guest speakers, and/or presenters that promote wellness for teachers.
Lead: Sabin- need volunteer, ACCESS- need volunteer
Physical Education and other Physical Activity Programs: Promoting family and community physical activities such as Bike and Walk to School Day, Safe Routes to School, the Spring $5 helmet sale, etc.
Lead: Sabin-Bill Grieser, ACCESS- need volunteer
Nutrition Services: Support of the staff during lunch and lunchtime recess. Coordinating volunteers to be in the lunchroom to assist with helping kids getting their lunches, opening foods, encouraging kids to try fruits and vegetables at the salad bar. Encouraging outdoor play or quiet activities in leu of movies on rainy days, coordinating in-door and outdoor recess volunteers to assist in engaging kids in play and monitor safety.

Health Promotion for School Staff: Encouraging staff to engage in healthy behaviors through staff newsletters, promoting healthy events in their classrooms such as birthday celebrations once per month, only allowing healthy foods and snacks into the classrooms if snacks are necessary, promoting teachers to have students learn about and present a booth on a wellness topic at the Spring Wellness Fair, etc.
