February 2012
Dear Sabin Families,
We have much to celebrate at Sabin, including some exciting new information listed below. Thank you so much for all that you do to support our outstanding students and school.
Sabin’s PYP Programme is an Official IB School!
We recently received notice that Sabin’s PYP (Pre K-5th) Programme has met all requirements for IB authorization. This means that we are now identified by International Baccalaureate as an official IB World School. Please join me in thanking some of the many people who have worked diligently to make this happen:
- Sabin teachers and staff
- Claudia Tautfest, Sabin IB Coordinator
- Sabin families and PTA
Obtaining IB authorization has been a collaborative process and is a great example of what our community can accomplish when we work together to support the instructional needs of all students.
Breakfast Changes: Free and Reduced Lunch Students
A friendly reminder that students who qualify for free and reduced lunch are still eligible for free and reduced breakfast.
Board Approves Sabin Remaining a Pre K-8!
Last month the Board approved the Superintendent’s recommendation that Sabin remain a Pre K-8. A huge thanks to all of our families who participated in providing their feedback and input to the central office during this process.
This will impact Sabin in four different areas:
- Sabin will remain a Pre K-8th school
- The option for Sabin 5th grade students to automatically enroll at Beaumont middle school will end. If 5th grade students choose to attend Beaumont for the 2012-2013 school year, they will need to participate in the lottery and enrollment will be contingent upon space availability at Beaumont.
- The western part of Alameda’s boundary will be redrawn to be included in Sabin’s attendance area. This will start with Kindergarten students.
- ACCESS Academy will begin the process to find a new location by September 2013.
Welcoming new Alameda Families
I will host an ice cream Welcome Social on Wednesday, February 22 from 3:15-4:15 PM in the Auditorium. This will be a fun opportunity to meet our new families and share what makes Sabin a great school.

TAG Corner
It has been a busy month for TAG! We started the month with testing our potential TAG students. We should have results back in early March, at that point we make our recommendation to the TAG office and they will send you the final determination. If you have any questions along the way don’t hesitate to call or email me at joyhunt@pps.net.
Next week we will start our new enrichment classes for 3-5th grade. This term it will be a math class focusing on Geometry. Sign up sheets were sent home last week and students are eager to begin.
Good news! The Saturday Academy TAG Challenge Camp returns in 2012 with a new theme and a host of new classes. This year we will be exploring “Our Place in the Universe” and investigating the unique characteristics of planet earth and the mysteries of space.
- For students entering grades 4-5, camp will take place the week of June 18-22 at Reed College. http://tinyurl.com/SATAG4-5
- For students entering grades 6-8, camp will take place the week of July 30-August 3 at University of Portland. http://tinyurl.com/SATAGMS
Trauma Nurses Talk Tough to Kids About Life/Bike Safety
On Friday, February 10th Legecy Emanuel Medical Center trauma nurses will be presenting to Sabin Students! The class is designed for children in K-8th grades and their parents, and focuses on pedestrian, bicycle and auto safety.
For grades K-2, they accentuate the positive as much as possible. It is necessary to briefly cover what the brain does, so they can understand how important it is to keep their brain safe. They do this in a fun way by playing a short game of “Simon Says” and discussing what part of the body is essential for playing the game. As the younger grades are very impressionable, they do not need the material to be as hard-hitting as for the older students.
Grades 3-5 require the message to be tougher than the younger grades. Boys, especially at this age, may be engaging in reckless behavior and may think the message is sissy stuff. They have found, however, than once the presentation is under way, they pay close attention to what is said and shown.
Documentary Film Series
The second installment of our documentary film series will be held Tuesday, February 28th, from 6:30 - 8:00pm. We will be screening the first segment of the acclaimed PBS series "Unnatural Causes." This segment "In Sickness and in Wealth," explores how power, wealth, and resources shape opportunities for health. This piece runs 56 minutes and will be followed by a speaker from the Multnomah County Health Department.
Refreshments will be served, and of course, this event is free and open to any and all!
