Dear Roseway Heights Families,

I am so pleased with how the first week of school has gone!  You may have noticed that we have a lot of students.  We are doing some final adjustments but the total was 598 as of last Friday which is a large increase over last year.   The District will be doing two official enrollment counts in the next two weeks.  From that they will look at schools who are either significantly over or under their expected enrollment.  Whether Roseway Heights will be given some additional support based on our numbers, I do not yet know.  Whatever happens with staffing, we will be using staff strategically to ensure we are meeting students’ needs and the teachers are getting the support they need.

I want you to be aware of a change in the calendar we made.  Back to School Night has been moved forward to Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 pm.  I feel it is very important that families be able to hear from teachers as early in the year as possible about their classroom procedures and expectations.  On the 21st you will have a chance to hear briefly from me about how Roseway Heights is doing and my goals for the coming year.  Then from about 7-8 pm you will have the chance to hear up to three different teacher presentations (each teacher will give about a 20 minute overview of his or her classroom).  At the November conferences you will have the time to meet one on one with your child’s teacher or teachers to hear how your child is progressing.

A couple of safety reminders:  please watch for students, especially those on Safety Patrol when you are dropping off or picking up students.  Please do not stop or park in front of the school as the street is so narrow buses and cars are not able to get through.  We welcome parents to come and volunteer but ask that every time you come to volunteer you check in at the office and wear a visitor or volunteer tag.  Safety of the students is our highest priority and monitoring who is in the building is an important part of ensuring that safety.  If you need to pick up your child prior to dismissal, please come to the office and we will contact your child’s classroom and have the student come to the office.  Please do not go directly to your child’s classroom to check them out.  And finally, to ease congestion in the hall and make sure students are able to transition smoothly at the end of the day, please wait until after 2:10 pm to come into the hallways to pick up your child or children.  Prior to that, please wait either by the office or by the Student Services offices near the gym.  In the morning the front doors remain locked until 7:50 am.  If your child is having breakfast or using the open gym, they can enter the building at 7:30 through the doors by Student Services and the gym.  Thank you for helping us keep all of our children safe.

I am looking forward to getting to know your children and to working with you.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would just like to introduce yourself.  You can either schedule a time to talk on the phone with me through the secretaries by calling the office or send me an email at slewins@pps.net.  I am excited about the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Sarah Lewins, Principal
