Good Bye - From Principal Kristie Lindholm

July 27, 2014

Dear Rigler Community:

I hope this finds you enjoying a happy, restful summer break. Even while many of us have taken breaks and vacations, others have been hard at work, learning and teaching. We have hosted two awesome summer programs for our students and SUN has had weeks of programming. Our custodial staff has been working hard to clean every inch of our classrooms and common spaces so families will find a beautiful and welcoming space in September. Our school is a busy place!

I am very proud of the work that we do in our school and the growth that I’ve seen in our students, in our staff and in our community. Because we have worked so hard and enjoyed so many successes, I have mixed emotions telling you that I will not be at Rigler this next year.

I’ve been offered a position at another PPS school and have accepted the job. The time is right for me professionally and personally to make a change. Rigler has many systems and traditions in place that will allow a new leader to come in and carry on our good work.

Staff and parent voices are critical in selecting the next leader for Rigler. Please attend the community meeting next Monday night to let PPS know what’s important to you. I will work closely with the new leader, and with our AP Ruth Tucker, to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible.

See the information below on Monday’s community meeting.

Know that I have loved working and learning in the Rigler community. I have grown professionally and personally in the time I’ve spent with you. Thank you for the opportunity to work alongside you to make our community the place we want for our children.

With gratitude,

Kristie Lindholm

Community Meeting
for Selection of Next Year’s Principal

Monday, August 4th, 2014    -   6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Rigler School

Staff, parents, and students are invited to attend this meeting - your ideas and input are important!

The community meeting is one of the first steps taken in our principal hiring process. Michelle Riddell, the Assistant Chief Human Resources Officer, and Lisa McCall, your new Regional Administrator, will come to your school and meet with teachers and parents together.

The purpose of the meeting is to hear what you think is special about your school. We want to know about your programs, demographics, parent involvement, special projects, etc., and about the type of person you would like to have as your permanent Principal. This information helps us select candidates that have qualifications that support those elements.

At the meeting we will also take time to explain the full hiring process. We will explain two main possibilities: a) how the Community Meeting information may be used with the Regional Administrators to place a current Principal because of a great match between the school and that Principal, or b) if a match is not selected by the Regional Administrators, applicants chosen will go through a rigorous process to be selected for interviews.

If you cannot attend that evening, I will have other ways to provide information (on-line and paper surveys, emails, etc.)

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me – Maili Halverson 503-916-3059 – mhalvers@pps.net - 503-916-3059

Adios - Principal Kristie Lindholm

Supporting families with information

June 10, 2014

Dear Families:

We wish to provide you with information and support in light of the shooting Tuesday morning at Reynolds High School in the city of Troutdale, outside Portland.

Our students remained safe and supported during this incident and will continue to be supported at school in the coming days. However, we know that such an incident raises concerns and questions.

Portland Public Schools has detailed emergency plans for all schools. Schools hold frequent drills so that students can practice what to do in case of a potential emergencies. Our Portland Police Bureau School Resource Officers provide enormous support with student safety, including forming relationships with students to prevent incidents from ever occurring.

In the case of an emergency at one or more of our schools, PPS communicates directions to families by phone in all supported languages. We also communicate via email, text and social media. We use the family contact information provided on students’ registration forms. Please keep this information up to date in your school office.

Your student may wish to talk about what happened at Reynolds or other similar situations. Let them process their feelings while also offering reassurance about the work their school is doing to support their safety. Remind students that they can also help by always letting an adult know if they see something that seems suspicious. Communities create safe places by working together.

Sometimes these incidents bring up memories of other difficult things a student has experienced. If your student needs counseling assistance, please talk to your principal to connect with resources. The Multnomah County Crisis Line can also help at 503-998-4888.

The PPS Language Line staff members are available to help families who speak limited English. Please use the following phone numbers:

Español | Spanish

Thank you for your attention. We know that you will also support your student in continuing to feel positive about the end of their school year and their personal accomplishments.
