Dear parents,

    Welcome to the second grade! You'll be receiving lots of information about our classroom over the coming days and weeks. I am excited and humbled to be selected as your child's educator and would like you to know a little more about my education and teaching background.

    I am originally from Florida where I attended public school in St. Petersburg. In 2004 I graduated from Florida State University with a B.A. in Humanities. At FSU my studies focused on 20^th century art, philosophy, religion, journalism and creative writing. In January of 2005 I began substitute teaching full-time in Florida's Pinellas County Schools. During this time I became a long-term sub for a 7^th grade life-science class. In June of that year I moved to Portland. In the '05-'06 school year I worked at the non-profit after-school program Friendly Chaps in NW Portland.

    In '06-'07 I earned my Masters in Education from Portland State University and received my Early Childhood and Elementary teaching certification from Oregon's Teachers Standards and Practicing Commission. During this time I student-taught at Rose City Park Elementary School. For the following three years I was a guest teacher in Portland Public Schools. I have worked in over 50 schools in two states at every grade level with literally thousands of different students. Nothing has prepared me for teaching more than the experience of working with kids from all walks of life.

    This will be the start of my second year at Richmond. I love our kids, staff and families. I consider it an honor to be a part of such a thoughtful and caring community.
