7 ways to encourage literacy at home:

1. Family Reading Hour
For children to become lifelong readers, it's important that they view reading as something that enriches our lives, not just an academic chore in school. One way to accomplishe this is by establishing a family reading hour. A student is never too old to be read aloud to!

2. Write a Sequel
Does your student have a favorite story? Encourage them to write a sequel.

3. Tell Family Stories
Teach values, pass on family history, cultural traditions and build your student's listening and thinking skills. Photos from a family album can illustrate the stories.

4. Family Collage
Your student will love making a photo collage of your family. Try mixed media!

5. Shopping Lists
Next time you go grocery shopping, let your student write the list and help locate items in the store.

6. Kitchen Helpers
Browse a cookbook with your student. Pick out a recipe and read through the instructions. Make something yummy!

7. That's a Rap
Put your creative talents to use and tell your favorite story with rhythm!
(Consider trying Flocabulary to help.)
