Peninsula Playground Policies

2008-2009

Lunch Recess and Teacher lead Recesses

Goal: Students will play safely in all games and on all equipment while interacting with courtesy and respect.

Responsible Playground Behavior
  • Rough Play will not be used on the playground.
  • When the whistle blows or the ball rings students are to STOP what they are doing and immediately line up.
  • Students will settle differences peacefully.
  • Students will not leave they playground for any reason without permission and a pass from an adult, including students who need to use the restroom.
Expectations
  1. Students will show respect for others in words and actions.
  2. Students will respectfully and immediately follow directions given by adults.
  3. Students will leave rocks, bark, sticks, and other dangerous objects alone.
  4. Students will play only on playground areas, not in the courtyard.
  5. Students will show pride in their school by keeping building and grounds free of litter.
  6. Students will not chew gum, eat candy or drink beverages on the playground.
  7. Students will not bring any personal items (other than sports equipment) out to the playground.
  8. Students will not kick any balls on the blacktop except at the kickball diamond.
Consequences for Infractions (Teacher discretion depending on severity)
  • Verbal correction.
  • Positive practice (have the student do it the right way).
  • Have the student stay with you for 2 minutes.
  • Time-out against the wall.
  • Send student to Office with behavior report (Follow up with parent and/or classroom teacher as necessary. Teacher may be notified via voicemail).
**NOTE: Corrections need to be brief and teacher must continue to scan and supervise area while handing all infractions.

Encouragement Procedures

Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions.
  1. Friendly interactions from playground supervisors.
  2. Monthly Friday ‘Reward Recess’ after 10 compliments, (students w/behavior reports no reward - go to timeout room) **Yet to be developed
Playground Supervision Responsibilities
  • All supervisors will circulate and scan within assigned area and avoid standing in one place.
  • Supervisors will be visible and interact positively with many students by greeting them and engaging in short and friendly conversation.
  • When a student violates a rule, a supervisor will give a firm but polite, verbal reprimand, first using a firm but respectful voice.
  • Consequence should be reasonable and fit the infraction.
  • Complete a behavior report for repeated or more severe offenses. (Follow up with parent and/or classroom teacher as necessary. Teacher may be notified via voicemail).
  • Crises Procedures: Notify the office via the walkie talkie when any of the following occurs:
    • Severe injury/medical crisis
    • Fighting out of control
    • Stranger or animal on the playground
    • Physically dangerous acts or illegal acts
    • Gross insubordination.
    • Student leaves school site without permission.
  • Supervisors will report to duty on time with a whistle. (Principal to check, make note of omission and give reminders).
  • First duty person will pick up walkie talkie and passes.
    • Teacher lead recess includes notification to office and carrying a walkie talkie.
  • Supervisors will hand out bathroom passes as requested by students.
  • Supervisors will continue to scan and supervise area while handing all situations.
  • Supervisors will at no time sit down while on duty or engage in lengthy discussions with co-workers.
Emergency Procedures

First Aid Injuries
  1. Send student to office IMMEDIATELY (supervisor decision as to whether accompanied by peer, adult or alone).
  2. Notify office via walkie-talkie.
Medical Injuries
  1. Assess injury need
  2. Contact office (office procedures to be developed)
  3. Decision as to action (walk to office, send medical person to playground, etc.)
  4. File injury report with office
Teaching Responsibilities

During the first week of each new school year, and during the first week a new procedure is implemented, each classroom teacher will conduct a lesson on playground behavior. These lessons will consist of a discussion of the rules. The teacher should actually take the students on a tour of the playground to discuss off-limit areas. The teacher will go through the rules and then spend time teaching and conflict resolution strategies.

** NOTE: Due to high student mobility rate, teachers will review playground expectations at the beginning of each trimester.
