Dear Hayhurst Community,

It is hard to believe how fast this school year is flying by, and I am already gearing up for next year. As I am sure you have heard, the Portland School district is facing another challenging financial year ahead. The budget cuts from the state, affect all of our schools, and unfortunately, this includes Hayhurst.

On a positive note, I want to begin this letter with congratulations and thank you to Mrs. Kathy Taylor, Mrs. Sandi Rosenfeld, and Mrs. Tina Daily for their wonderful dedication to students and teaching for many years. All three of these wonderful educators will be retiring this year. As a community we will be able to thank them and give them good cheer in retirement on June 14, 2012, 2.30-4.30pm in the school cafeteria. Please save the date.

As a building, we needed to make a budget cut of 1.25 FTE, which for the size of our school is a rather large chunk. The cuts that were made this past week, could change, as the district is always working on ways to gain funding to support our schools. This being said, I will give you where we are at today, but please understand that changes with staff can still occur between now and the start of the 2012-2013 school year. Class sizes will be between 28-30 throughout the entire school, this will be a common size throughout the district. With the retirement of teachers, I was able to take the 1.0 staff cut without it actually being a specific person. The .25 cut will c0me from the loss of our school secretary Melissa Whiteside. We will now be down to a one secretary school which at times can be a bit challenging. I am asking you early to please be patient with the office.

As of April 2012, the staffing in the Neighborhood School will look as follows:

Kindergarten = Mrs. LeRoy
Kindergarten = Mrs. Heller
½ Blend = Mrs. Bunnell
½ Blend =Mrs. Anderson
2/3 Blend = Mrs. Aalto
4th grade = Ms. Greenidge
4/5 Blend = Mrs. Morgan

All of our electives/specials will remain the same= full-time PE, half-time school counselor, half-time library, half-time technology.

As of April 2012 the staffing in the Odyssey Program will look as follows:

k.1.2 = Mr. Hermens
k.1.2 = Mrs. Wilebski
k.1.2 = New hire
3.4.5 = Ms. LeVan
3.4.5 = Mrs. Sexton
3.4.5 = Mrs. Kruger
6.7.8 = Mr. Damon
6.7.8 = Mrs. Rothwell
6.7.8 = Ms. Brinks/Mrs. Daley

As new developments occur, I will keep you posted, or this may be the layout for the upcoming school year. We are all very fortunate with the excellent teaching staff across the board at Hayhurst. Despite the tough economic times, I have full confidence that our students will receive a great education!!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call or email.

Thank you again for all of your wonderful support for our school community!
