Art Studio at Ockley Green
As an essential component of Arts instruction at Ockley Green, our program is designed to take full advantage of the unique opportunities for learning and personal growth that experience in the visual arts can provide. Students gain necessary and transferable skills of observation, expression, decision-making, perseverance, and reflective self-evaluation.
While working in various two and three-dimensional media, students receive specific direction in the effective manipulation of artists' tools, and gain understanding of the elements and principles of visual art. At the same time, their investigations provide ample opportunities for productive self-expression, problem-solving, and creative innovation, all skills which will serve them well in academics and in life, whatever their chosen path.
By approaching the visual arts from the four disciplines of history, criticism, aesthetics, and production, Ockley Green students receive a balanced and accessible education around the visual arts. Developmentally-appropriate lessons are connected to core curriculum, drawing also upon students' understandings and experiences in the world beyond the classroom. This type of balanced and relevant instruction allows for the development of acute perception and abstract thinking skills, which foster students' growth into healthy, productive, and successful human beings, in a world ever more demanding of innovative thinkers.
