About Us

The History of Ockley Green
The name is that of an old neighborhood, located around Interstate Avenue between Killingsworth and Ainsworth Streets. The first school in this location was called Albina-Multnomah. It opened in 1890. In 1900, the name was changed to Ockley Green, which was the name on an early street railway line.
In the early 1900s, the neighborhood also had an Ockley Green Theater and an Ockley Green United Evangelical Church. George Ockley owned land in this vicinity and the carline stop was near his property. The 1901 City Directory lists Ockley Green (presumably the carline stop) as located at Killingsworth Street and Denver Avenue.
There was also in Portland at this time a small hotel call The Ockley. It was on the west side of Morrison Street at about 18th and offered "finished rooms." Since there was only one Ockley family in Portland then, we suppose George Ockley was the proprietor. The origin of "Green" in the name is uncertain, but it may have referred simply to a park or square, as in Bowling Green. If it is a family name, it is most likely that of Henry Green.

BUDDY TIME!
It’s “Buddy Time!” A pleasant hush blankets the building as younger and older students meet and work together, enjoying the time to make new friends and reach out to others. In an effort to continue our goal of bringing all of our students together and uniting our learning community, kindergarten through 8th grade, all of our students have a “buddy,” a student from another grade to get to know and learn with. Two days in December brought students together to meet their buddies and have some fun, engaging in arts and craft activities, games, and entertainment. In the coming months, these relationships will be deepened and directed toward learning goals as we discover the richness of having 9 grades of children learning together in the same building.
