Brochure Project
Brochure instructions for
the library.
Students click on the
download link for the Brochure template. (Below) (Read the instructions first!)
Students select "Open with.." and when the document opens in OpenOffice students immediately do a Save As using their name in the title.
Refer to a printed and folded example of the brochure to help students figure out how to layout their content. It might be wise to have examples for each student so that they can see where to put their text so that it appears in the correct order in the brochure.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Students should save often!
Remember that in the library they can save to their desktops but because this
is not true in the Windows lab, you should discourage this practice.
We do not have a duplexing
printer, so unless you run all of the student work through the copier, you will
have to glue/tape the two “pages” of the brochure back-to-back to get the
complete brochure.
Note that if text overflows
a page, it may not go to the appropriate next page! The template is setup like
columns and the text “snakes for one column to the next which is not how the
brochure will read when folded!
NOTES FOR PICTURES!
Remember that it's a
black/white printer! So pick images that will make sense in black/white.
Images from the web should
be saved to the student computer before inserting into the brochure.
Given the choice, pick the
larger of two pictures, remember that large on the screen does not translate to
large on the printed page.
Inserting Pictures:
Right-click on the picture
that you wish to save and select “Save image as ...” from the menu that
appears. Note that the default location is the desktop, but pay attention to
where you are saving it so that you can find it again when you want to insert
it.
In Open Office Writer put
the cursor where you want to insert the picture and click on the Insert menu
item at the top of the screen. Select “Picture” and then slide over to select
“From File ...” Navigate to where you saved the picture and click on it and
click “Open” to insert it.
Resize pictures by clicking
on them (they are already highlighted if you just inserted them) and dragging a
corner. You shouldn't try to make the picture bigger as it's quality will
decrease.
SAVE OFTEN!! ESPECIALLY
BEFORE INSERTING PICTURES! That way
if the insertion causes a weird shift in everything you can close the document
and not save and then reopen it to the previous saved state.
Ctrl + Z undoes the last thing you did!
