About the school

Mount Tabor Middle School sets a high bar for its students. Faculty work hard to build relationships so that all students feel connected, recognized and supported.
Our school houses the district’s Japanese Immersion Program for grades 6-8, a growing Spanish Immersion Program and a neighborhood middle school. Mt. Tabor provides extra services through a Support Education Program and Columbia Regional Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program.
Mt. Tabor strives to balance rich, historic traditions while creating new customs that reflect Portland’s ever-changing neighborhoods. This is our motto: Strong Community, Strong Results.

Personalized learning

  • Sixth-graders benefit from strong teacher-student relationships. The school counselor connects with students early to support the middle school transition.
  • In sixth grade, language arts (or language immersion) classes are paired with social studies classes. This keeps students together — creating small communities of learners that ease the move to middle school and foster innovative teaching.
  • Teachers work closely with staff and special needs students and families to support students through promotion to ninth grade.
Engagement for learning
Mt. Tabor responds to students’ academic needs with support and enrichment, including:
  • Battle of the Books, National Geographic Geography Bee, Scripps Spelling Bee
  • Art, band, Spanish, health, physical education, yearbook and Project Green
  • Advanced math placement and on-site high school-level geometry
  • Year-end portfolio conference where students demonstrate academic growth
Students participate weekly in BASICS — Building a Safe, Involved Community with Students. Topics include empathy and communication, bullying prevention, emotion management and coping, problem solving, decision making and goal setting, and substance abuse prevention.
