Hand2Mouth & MLC High School Students

Students from the High School Drama & Ink Class have been working on an original production this trimester during A Block. Through a collaboration with Hand2Mouth Theatre, students have written, produced, and created all of the elements of an original theater performance. The student writers, designers, actors, and stage managers will perform twice for this season's culminating event (and student Portfolio Project). Opening night is Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 6:30pm in the MLC Auditorium. We will also perform for the MLC high school student community on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:00am in the Auditorium. The MLC Community is invited to attend these original productions, so come! See high school students at their best!

We are looking for involved community members, small business owners, teacher at other schools, professors, and folks who are professionals in their field. Ultimately the volunteers for this event are people who see the value in providing feedback to young people and enhancing their educational experience.  Is this you?  Respond to Jerene Merritt (jmerritt@pps.net) and let her know which date works best for you to participate?  Does this sound like someone you know?  If so, then please feel free to either pass along my contact information to them or provide me with their email address.   While the panels meet for three days total, we ask that volunteers commit to one full day, from approximately 8:00-4:00.

Theater! Theater!
Last week, September 25th, our whole high school attended a performance of the Greek play Iphigenia in Tauris at Reed College. The play was well acted and it was a beautiful day in the outdoor Cerf Amphitheatre. Following the play the students participated in a scavenger hunt, seeking out all the centers of student academic life on campus. Overall a great day.

This upcoming week, on Thursday, we are taking a trip to the Gerding Theater at the Armory to see Portland Center Stage's production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Oklahoma! We are excited for this trip as the Armory’s architecture is beautiful, the play has been getting great reviews (see the Oregonian's review here) and it provides an opportunity to deepen our student's understandings of the rich multicultural history of the United States.

While these theater performances are still fresh in your students' minds we ask you to join us in engaging them in conversations on Greek Mythology, Democracy, College plans, traveling safely in the city, musical theater, and the often unexamined multitude of roles people of color have played in our country's history.
