THIS MONTH AT MARYSVILLE

February Parent Connections (Formerly known as Parent Tea) will be held on Tuesday, February 14th 2012 at Mt. Scott Community Center.

February Late-Opening is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th, 2012.  School will begin two hours late on this day so please mark your calendar!

President's Day is observed Monday February 20th, 2012.  There is no school this day so please mark your calendar!

4th/5th Grade Girls Basketball has a number of games this month, please check Coach Jory's Playworks page for the schedule here.

State Testing Grades 3^rd – 8^th:  State testing will begin on Monday, February 6^th and continue through Friday, February 17^th.  We will test reading during the first week and math the second.  Please encourage your student to come to school on time each day, attendance is very important.  Also encourage them to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.  

High School Choice Ends February 29th, make sure you've made your choices by that time!

Free or Reduced Price Meals Students who qualified for free or reduced-price meals in 2010-11 must reapply before October 11 to continue to receive benefits - but it’s best not to wait. They can continue to receive free or reduced-price meals through October 11 before they must reapply.

A new family application must be submitted at the beginning of each school year. If your household meets the eligibility guidelines, your child(ren) will be approved for free or reduced price meals. An online application is available at: http://www.pps.k12.or.us/departments/nutrition/     

Full-Price Meals: Meal pre-payment options Bring a check made payable to Portland Public Schools to the Cafeteria. Be sure to include your student's first and last name on the check. OR better yet enroll in the on-line prepayment sevice www.myLunchMoney.com

Meal accounts for continuing students must have a positive balance to eat school meals. Kindergarteners and new students need to pay for meals the first day of school or have an approved meal application.

School Based Child-Care:

BACKPACK-FOOD PROGRAM AT MARYSVILLE:
Marysville has been given a special opportunity to host a backpack-food program this year. We will be working with a local church and non-profit organization to provide food on weekends to families in need. Backpacks will be filled with non-perishable foods and sent home every Friday with students. We will be contacting families individually, but if you are interested and are in NEED of additional food, please contact Gina at 503-544-3380 or email gkim-folston@impactnw.org. Space is limited and families will need to go through a screening process.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL:
Since schools are an easy place to spread illness, keep your child home if they show signs of being sick, such as a fever higher than 100 degrees, sore throat, cough, or any rashes.

Marysville Electronics Policy

Cell Phone,Game Boys, MP3 players Policy:  Cell phone, Game Boys, MP3 players usage is prohibited during school hours or programs.  When staff members notice these items during school hours, the following policy will be enforced.

1st Offense

   It will be confiscated by the staff member.  The item will be returned to the student at the end of the day. 

2nd Offense

    Upon a second offense, the item will be sent to the office. Parents must check into the office to retrieve the item.  Please review district policy below.

3rd Offense

    The item will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school year.

The district does not provide payment for student property that is lost, stolen or damaged at school.  All items (e.g.. Electronics, cell phones, game boys) are brought to school at the sole risk of the owner. The school will not spend time or energies in recovery of items these items.  Expensive items invite theft and lockers are not safe places to store valuable items

Marysville Dress Code Policy

Appropriate dress contributes to a positive environment. According to district policy 4.30.012, students may be directed to change dress, parents may be called, and consequences given to repeat offenders, if the dress interferes with the learning process or school climate, is unclean, or threatens the health or safety of the student or others.  Below is the dress code policy for Marysville K-8 School:

1. Clothing which promote smoking, drugs or alcohol, violence, racism, vulgarity, profanity, insults, ridicules or anything that is sexually suggestive is unacceptable.    

2. Please note that in a K-8 school, something that looks “cute” on a primary student may be revealing and inappropriate on an older student. The strap on tops must be at least two fingers in width (4-8 grade). Any immodest clothing on any student such as crop tops, visible midriff, bare backs, see through, plunging necklines or underwear showing is unacceptable.

3. Sagging pants, hanging belts, or pajamas are unacceptable.

4. Shorts and skirts must be longer than the length of a student’s fingertips resting at their sides. (This includes slits) 

5. Rolling shoes (with wheels) are not allowed. 

6. Hats, hairnets, scarves, bandanas, headbands, hoods, or any other headgear are not allowed. (except for religious purposes) 

7. Accessories such as sunglasses, headbands, bandanas, chain belts, choke collars, spikes, pacifiers, etc, are not allowed. 

8. Gloves, single or pairs are not allowed. 

9. Clothing must be clean 

10. Gang writing on any surface is banned. 

Board Policy 4.30.012 provides: “The responsibility for the dress and grooming of a student rests primarily with the student and his or her parents or guardians.” Parents are responsible for ensuring student compliance with the school dress code.
