Hello to the Marysville Community and Visitors!
I am Thea W. Hayes, the Marysville Science & Health teacher for 7th and 8th grade students. My current assignment also includes Math Intervention for 7th graders. I have 19 years of teaching experience at the middle school level, having taught first at Ockley Green, then at Binnsmead, and now at Marysville K-8. Thank you for visiting my site.
What about Me?
I was born and raised in the New York City area, surrounded by art & music. A great love of science from an early age on took me to college at North Carolina State University (B.S. Botany), Yale University School of Forestry (M.F.S. in Forest Science), and Lewis & Clark College (M.A.T. in Teaching). Following my sister, I moved to Portland in the 1980's. At 23, my eldest daughter is in the workforce (!), and my youngest daughter is 14 and attending David Douglas High School. My husband of 5 years is currently attending Mt. Hood Community college, earning his associates degree in Mechanical Engineering.
The Curriculum & Skill Development
It's obvious to anyone who talks to me or sits in my classroom that I have a great love of anything science and health related, with my greatest interest in environmental sciences. 7th graders work on the PPS required Physical Science topics, and 8th graders on Earth Science, and I weave environmental issues throughout. Students use lab notebooks daily, have weekly homework that includes vocabulary and content-related questions, and earn extra credit writing about current events. Lab activities and projects are standard, and students are encouraged to work on extra-credit activities that reflect their interests.
