From the desk of the Principal...

     June, 2011

    Pauling Families:

It is official, Pauling Academy is now closed. I have enjoyed serving as your principal and I feel we can all be proud of our accomplishments over the last several years. It is sad to see Pauling close when we were doing so well at raising students’ test scores and closing the achievement gap. But it is not to mourn the loss of our school that I write this letter.

I congratulate Pauling’s staff, students, and families at having a remarkable last year. We continued our partnership with OMSI and the Jordan Foundation as we focused on maximizing our students’ field experiences. Many of our students had the opportunity to see the Alvin Ailey dancers, participate in the Writers in the Schools project, earn credits at PSU for Mr. Stremming’s senior inquiry class, see the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, go to OMSI, visit a working farm, do a “ropes” challenge course at Camp Collins, and participate in one of our campus’ best Proms ever. Some of our students this year brought home awards from the PPS Science Expo – a first for our school.

Our teachers and students kept their focus on strong academics. We graduated 41 seniors in the class of 2011, the last class to graduate from this campus. We had students receive scholarships at many universities and community colleges, and we prepared all of our students for post-secondary learning opportunities by advancing the reading, writing, mathematics, and science skills they have as they progress toward graduation.

For those going on to Madison or Franklin, please keep in contact with those schools regarding your address, phone numbers, and registering for school in August. Madison is located at 2735 NE 82nd Avenue; their phone number is 503-916-5220.  Franklin is located at 5405 SE Woodward and their phone number is 503-916-5410.

Please note that your students’ meal account balances (both positive and negative) and eligibility status for school meals will automatically follow your student to their new PPS school. Once enrollment changes are recorded, their account information will be available at the new school within 24 hours.

The Pauling office will be open until June 29th. Our availability is unfortunately not constant as there is much to do to close the Marshall Campus, but if you call and leave a message we will get back to you as soon as possible.

It is with great pride in our accomplishments that I send you my best wishes for the future, whatever it holds for you and your family.

    Sincerely,

    David J. Hamilton, Ed.D.

Pauling Academy named a "Best High School" by US News and World Report

It's no surprise to our students, families or staff that we are one of the best High Schools in the nation. But it's nice to have others notice too.
