Dear Markham Families,

Welcome to the month of February!  Spring is fast approaching; I know because those daffodils are past the point of peeking out of the dirt. They are loudly announcing the coming of spring. 

We announced Family Reading Night and Markham families answered the call.  There were over 270 in attendance.  Our Events Committee did a fabulous job of planning the evening.  Randy Emberlin, a local animator and illustrator wowed us all by turning us into cartoonist.  Anne Rutherford, an acclaimed storyteller, actor and performer captivated us with original tales.  Our own Mr. Casqueiro and Natasha Forrester from the Capitol Hill Library engaged eager listeners with their talents of really knowing how to bring a story book alive.  And if all that was not enough, Mr. Johnson, our PE teacher, created a literary obstacle course in the gym that was a sensational hit.  To round out the evening, every child took home a book of their choice along with a delicious chocolate chip cookie to go.  Keep your eyes and ears peeled for Family Math Night coming in April.  It promises to be a plus as well.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Adam Napier, our head custodian.  We have been waiting for Adam to arrive back home safely from his tour in Kuwait.  We are very thankful to have him as a part of the Markham team and very grateful to him for his service to our country.

Please tell your neighbors and friends that have children that are 5 or will turn 5 years old by September 1^st to come and learn about our impressive kindergarten program during Kindergarten Round-Up on February 9^th at 6:30 p.m. and our Kindergarten Welcome Night on February 29^th at 6:00 p.m.  Kindergarten Round-Up is for parents only and Kindergarten Welcome Night is for children and parents. Markham tours will be offered for all prospective students in grades K-5 each Wednesday starting January 4^th through March 7th from 9:30 to 10:30. For those planning on attending, please call the school office to schedule an appointment, (503) 916-5681. 

A big thank you to Mr. Reynolds for bringing his chipper to school to recycle Christmas trees; all proceeds went towards art and music classes.  I applaud the parents, present and former students of Markham, and staff for the giving of their time and energy for such a good cause.  We had a great time!

The next “Sharing with Shawn is February 17^th at 9:00 a.m. in the MCCA room.  I look forward to seeing you there. 

This is a reminder to please not send students to school before 8:20 a.m.  There is no supervision before this time.
