News From Room 113
January 6, 2012
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! Thank you all for the wonderful gift basket presented to me for the holidays. I am very grateful for all the generous, thoughtful and beautiful gifts that you bestowed upon me. I shared many with my family and have enjoyed several trips to bookstores!
If you have not had the chance to be in the classroom this week, I hope your child has shared the grand news that we have a new carpet. It is fabulous. We are very grateful for the generosity of the PTA to replace our carpet. If you are concerned about your child sitting on the carpet because of chemicals, please let me know. Justin’s mom, Deborah, has done a great deal of research for the school on the carpets and can answer questions you might have.
Although February is Black History Month, we are studying Black Americans this month. We will read, talk and write about a Black American most days this month. This week we learned about Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks and Langston Hughes. Next Friday, at 1 pm, we will have an assembly celebrating the work of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. The kindergarten students will be singing. You are welcome to join us. It will last about 30 minutes.
Next week, I will be gone Monday and Tuesday to take care of my mom. Guest teacher, Carmie McMinn, will be here. Please make sure to send a note if there are any changes to plans for your child to go home. Next week, Ms. Fuller and I will combine our classes in the mornings for a period of time, so that we can get required assessments done. We will be doing science and literacy work during this time. Our students enjoy working with each other and I know they will be excited to spend this time together.
Next Monday, a grab and go breakfast program will begin. The door to the cafeteria will be open at 7:40 for students to come in and get breakfast. If you drop your child off in the morning and want them to participate in the program, please remind them to walk to the cafeteria door, get their breakfast, and then come to class. Breakfast will be available until 8:30, so if your child is late, bring them to the office to sign in and then take them to the cafeteria, and then send them to class. It would be very helpful for me to know if you are expecting your child to get a breakfast, especially if it is on a daily basis, so I can make sure they picked it up. The cost of the breakfast is $1.10. There is no cost for students who receive free and reduced lunches.
Please mark your calendar for Family Math and Science Night, January 26 from 6-7:30. The PTA is working hard on preparing an enjoyable night for families.
We are beginning to make plans for Kindergarten Round-Up. It will be held Thursday, February 23 from 3-4. Please share this news with any of your friends and neighbors who will have a kindergarten student next year.
As always, thank you for your support and help in the classroom. I am very grateful. Have a nice weekend.
