Newsletter for November 18, 2011
One of our topics this week has been about being thankful. We are thankful to add a new student to our class this week! Her name is Mia. We have talked about being thankful for our friends, our families and all that we have. We have continued to focus on friendship and what that looks like and feels like. We have read stories about different kinds of families. Rachel’s mom came in and talked about families that adopt children. We learned Raechel’s story and how she came to be adopted. I liked the terms Ally shared with us about adoptive families. She taught us about the difference between the “real family” and the “forever family”. We worked with our reading buddies to make cards for Thanksgiving for residents at Crestview Convalescent Home.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know how thankful I am for having the privilege of working with your wonderful children. I feel blessed to be part of the Maplewood community. Thank you for your continued support and help.
On Monday, I sent home a copy of your conference time. Again, please contact Kathy, in the office, if you are unable to attend. 503.916.6308. I look forward to meeting with you.
We will be creating a card for a member of the military stationed in Afghanistan when we return after Thanksgiving. Our secretary, Kathy’s, son-in-law is on his 5th tour of duty and the cards will be sent to his unit. Please let me know if you have any objections to this project.
I am sending another math project home. It says to send the finished work back. You do not need to do this.
Have a great weekend.

Wanted…
Here are a few items we will be needing in the next few months…
*We will be making small gingerbread houses for our winter solstice celebration. We would appreciate small bags of candy for decorating our houses.
*Tree cookies
We are learning about trees this year and I would love to make a collection of tree “cookies”. (Tree cookies are cross sections of tree trunks that foresters and teachers use to illustrate how trees grow. Tree cookies reveal the many different layers that make up a tree. And each layer can tell us something about the tree's life and the climate in which it grew.) If you are cutting some wood and would cut us a “cookie” we would really appreciate it, or if you have a Christmas tree and would slice us a “cookie” when you recycle it, we would be very grateful.
