Dear Families,
It was so great to have most of our families at our Back To School Night. I enjoyed seeing your children show you around and share with you activities that are going on in our room. Thank you for coming.
We began having parent helpers in the room this week. I like to have parent helpers working with students and participating in our activities. I might have you do a production project, but most of the time you will be working with kids and helping manage activities that are going on. Please let me know if you have questions or if you need more directions or would prefer to help in a different manner.
One of the themes we have been working on in our class this week is bullying. This is a nationwide problem and Maplewood is working hard to help students recognize bullying, use common language when talking about bullying and to know what to do about it. I am very excited that Principal Annie has a speaker coming in next week, Thursday, October 20 from 6:30-7:30 for parents. I encourage you to come and hear about what we are doing at Maplewood, learn the language we will be using and what it means and how important the bystander role is. Please let me know if you have any questions.
This year there are a lot of new programs being introduced to our school. One of the new programs our school is in the process of implementing is the Enhancement piece of our reading program. As far as I understand, the Enhancement piece is a technique to instruct the direct and explicated teaching of letters and sounds. The big drawback of the implementation of this program is that it will take me out of the classroom three days next week and two days in February. I know that being out of the classroom is very stressful for students and very disruptive to our classroom routines. I apologize for this disruption. I will be out next Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the first training of this program. Thank you for your patience.
Our Create Center is a big hit in our room. We need your help to keep our imaginations working by sending in any “found items” or items that would be fun to create things with!
Attached you will find a great letter about the power of reading to your child. I encourage you to share 10-30 minutes a day enjoying books together.
      Have a nice weekend.
