Parents-

It’s hard to believe, but we are halfway done with school.   During the past two weeks, in reading, we have been talking about how people and animals change and grow.  We read one story, See How We Grow by Katacha Diaz, about twins and talked about how they changed from babies, to toddlers, to children.  The other story, Farfallina and Marcel by Holly Keller, is about a caterpillar and a gosling and how their friendship changes.   We talked about cause and effect, and plot with these two stories.  I have now introduced the book card to teach the sound ‘oo’ and the moon card to teach the sound ‘ew’.  The kids are enjoying using the new sounds when writing.  We have 24 sight words on the word wall and continue to work on them daily.

In writing, have been finishing up the personal narrative section for winter.  We will work on publishing a piece of work next week and then begin our informational writing unit.  In the last two weeks we focused on details and how to plan them in our story, as well as how to make a quick sketch in order to begin writing sooner.

In math, the calendar we have introduced contains three-dimensional shapes: sphere, cylinder, cube, and cone.  We continue to work on identifying coins, talking about their value, and practicing how to change pennies into nickels and dimes.  We are also working on writing numbers 11-20.

Next Tuesday is Valentine’s Day and I sent information home on Thursday.  We will take time in the morning to pass out our Valentine’s and in the afternoon students will have time to look at them.  If there is any candy, students will be bringing it all home, except for maybe one piece.

I will be gone next Friday for training, but have Ms. Huskey, and they love her.  Sharing will occur as planned and so check the sharing schedule I sent home to see if it is your student’s turn to bring something.  I’m sure by the end of March we will be in a routine and sharing will be more consistent.

Enjoy the weekend.
