Greetings Senators,

Spring is in full swing and we are quickly approaching our last quarter of the year. Third quarter ends on April 11th so please check in with your student and make sure that they are on track with the major class assignments.  You should have received progress reports in the mail the week of March 11th and another great way to check grades is to look at grades on EdBox.  If you are unsure of how to do so, please contact us and we will be happy to help.  Please remember that tutoring is available after school Monday-Thursday in the library until 5 pm. Please don’t hesitate to contact teachers and counselors as well.  All of us are committed to helping students earn all their credits and it is important for us to work together as a team. 

For parents of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, if you haven’t seen what your student has chosen for next year’s classes, please make sure and do so.  We are encouraging students to make challenging and thoughtful choices that will prepare students for college and career.  We know that students take different paths post high school, but it is our mission to ensure that each student is prepared to pursue their individual goals, including attending a four year university, two year community college, or other type of post-secondary training.  Please encourage your students to choose challenging courses, and also remember that schedule changes are approved only for extenuating circumstances, such as a medical issue. We build our programming and schedule based on student choices so requests for changes affect other students classes as well.  If you would like to learn more about exceptions to the schedule change policy, please feel free to ask. 

For parents of seniors, there is a lot going on this spring.  You should have already received a senior calendar that will help you keep track of all events and important dates to remember—this is also available under the “Information for Seniors” tab on our website.  Please continue to keep a close eye on how your seniors are doing in their classes--we don’t want a missed essay or test to get in the way of graduation day!  If your student is struggling with having enough credits, please contact his/her counselor immediately to talk about opportunities and plans. 

Finally, on April 23rd we will be administering the ACT exam to all juniors.  This exam is very important for college entrance so please make sure that your junior arrives to school on time and has had a good night’s rest.  We will be running different activities for the other classes.  Freshmen and sophomores will be working on a writing assignment that asks them to evaluate different sources, take a position on an issue, and write an essay.  This experience will be very important for them as it will be the next generation of how the state assesses students’ skill levels in reading, writing, listening, and critical thinking.  For the seniors, we will have opportunities to study, get their caps and gowns, and other “finishing up” kinds of activities.
