Dear Parents and Guardians;

My name is John Horn and I am the principal of Lent School. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. The staff has been working hard to prepare the building and classrooms for you and your children. Whether you are a returning family or brand new to Lent, we look forward to working together in order to provide an excellent education for your child in a safe and nurturing environment.

Visitors: All visitors going beyond the main lobby will need to sign in at the main office and wear a visitor badge when in the school. This includes before and after school. Parents will be allowed to take their students to class in the morning but only kindergarten parents will be allowed to go beyond the lobby without a visitor badge. We’re making this exception because we will have staff members in the kindergarten hallway.

Arrival and dismissal: The school day begins at 8:45 and ends at 3:00. There is an initial bell at 8:40 to send students to class and a tardy bell at 8:45. Students should plan on arriving to school about 8:30 and will be sent to either the cafeteria or gym, depending on the location of their classroom. Kindergarten students will go to the auditorium located across from the kindergarten rooms. Students will be dismissed to go to class when the 8:40 bell rings. Parents may accompany their children to class but must sign in and wear a visitor badge.

Parents are encouraged to meet their children in the lobby after school but may meet their children in the hallway outside of their classroom after receiving a visitor badge. The dismissal bell rings at 3:00.

Breakfast: All students in the school will have the opportunity to have a free breakfast. They can pick it up on the way to class.

Reporting absences: Regular attendance is essential for school success but illness, family emergencies, and appointments can result in a student missing school. If your child is going to miss school for any reason, please call 503-916-6322 to report the absence. Unreported absences will be recorded as unexcused absences and will result in a phone call to alert parents that the student was not in school that day. Please contact us when your child will be absent.

SUN Community Center: I am very pleased to announce that our SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) program has a new home this year. SUN will be located in the new SUN Community Center located to the left as you enter the building. SUN provides a wonderful after school program for our students but you may not be aware of the additional support available to families through the SUN program. Look for further communication from Yeng Cha, our SUN Site Manager, for more information about how SUN can support you and your family and feel free to visit the SUN Community Center whenever you are at the school.

Back to School Night: Mark your calendar for Back to School Night on September 23, from 6:00-8:00. This is an excellent time to meet your child’s teacher and learn what he or she will be doing this year. More specific information will be coming home in the coming days.
