Literacy Resources for Families
A Note of Caution
As your children’s reading skills grow, it can be so frustrating to find good reading materials for them at home. Many, many publishers “level” their books as “step 1” or “step 2”, or “1st grader reader”. Be Careful! Each publisher identifies a book based on their own curriculum and there is no consistency between them!
The best option is to choose books with your child and make them “try out” several pages. An easy read is one they can breeze right through. A hard read is one your child struggles over most of the words. Look for the in-between, where most words are readable and there are a few each page that need a bit of support.
High Frequency Words (sight words)
The following link is a complete list of all the words first grade readers need to know by the end of the year. The list comes from the District adopted readingcurriculum.
Phonics Connections
The link below is a fun and easy to use website called "Starfall". This is a free! site that allows children to practice their developing phonetic skills.
