Second Grade Valentine Project

Each child needs to decorate a container to hold their valentines. Each container needs to be about the size of a shoebox. Please make sure there is an opening to put valentines in as well as a way to open the box to get the valentines out.

Please do not bring the box until Tuesday, February 14th. We will have a small Valentine’s Day celebration on that day.

Please have your child bring enough valentines for everyone in the class. A class list is attached to this letter. Your child should also make a Valentine for his/her reading buddy.

This valentine project will take the place of homework the week of January 30-February 2, 2012. Enjoy!

Also, we are collecting the following for math;

-half cup measuring cups

-8 oz yogurt containers

-Quart sized yogurt containers

-Pint-sized cottage cheese containers

-Plastic cups

-Tin cans (please make sure there are no sharp edges)

-Plastic jars

Thank You,

Karrie Locke

Dear Parents,

We are starting our science unit on balance and motion this week and I think it will be a terrific learning experience as well as a lot of fun! I sent home a letter which might give you some ideas of related activities to do at home.

“Walk to Read” is going well, please help us remember to give your child a spelling list if he or she is absent on Monday. I hope every student is reading out loud and/or independently everyday for at least 20 minutes.

Math is so much fun this year! As indicated in the letter I sent home last week, we are beginning our unit on geometry. I hope you’re enjoying the math homework; I appreciate all of your positive comments.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, I will be out of the building for Equity Training; I hope everything will go smoothly in my absence.

As many of you know, I have been assessing students in math, writing and reading. All is going well and you will find out the progress your child has made when report cards come home the week of February 6th.

Have a terrific week,

Karrie Locke

Second Grade News Flash

There will be NO Homework and NO “Walk to Read” the week of January 30 through February 2, 2012.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to 2nd grade!  I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break.

We are continuing our work with Personal Narratives.  Our goal is to have a finished product in a couple of weeks.  We have some wonderful parents who are going to publish our stories.  If you are interested in helping with this project, please let me know.

In math we are concentrating on addition and subtraction facts and place value.  If your child does not have their doubles and fast tens down, this is the time to work on it.  If you need any ideas, just ask!

In a few weeks we will begin our science unit called “Balance and Motion”. This is a fun and exciting part of our curriculum and will lead us to making robots in March. More information will follow when we get started.

Martin Luther King Junior’s Birthday is around the corner, so I will be reading some books about him as well as having discussions about the contributions Martin Luther King made to American history. You might ask your child about him in a couple of weeks.

·      No school January 16th

·      Late opening January 18th

·      Passport Club Check January 26th

Thank you for all of your continued support,

Karrie Locke

December 12, 2011

I am amazed that we are headed into winter break, wow this year is going so fast. Please check the lost and found in the main building for any clothes that may belong to your family. Also, please help your child check his/her locker this week to make sure everything is out by Friday.

The students started new “Walk to Read” groups, they moved to a different second grade teacher for reading. Everyone appears to be excited and anxious to get into a routine.  Please encourage your child to read and write over the vacation.

Thank you so much for all of your support this year, I feel very fortunate to be able to work with each child in our class, they are such a great group of students.

I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and wonderful holiday season. Treasure the moments you get to spend together with family. I’ll see your child on Tuesday, January 3, 2012!

Sincerely,

Karrie Locke

November 28, 2011

Dear Parents,

Thank you for coming to parent/teacher conferences, I enjoyed talking to you about your child. I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving celebration with your family.

The next three weeks until winter break will be packed full of learning. We didn’t get started on writing personal narratives so we will begin writing those this week. Each child will be required to write a personal narrative in class by winter break. I will model what that is and give plenty of time for writing a rough draft and a final copy. You might encourage your child by helping him/her come up with ideas to write about.

In math, students are working on quick recall of addition and subtraction facts and probability. There are some very specific skills this unit includes in order to recall basic addition and subtraction facts. Please check the handout I sent home for more details. Don’t hesitate to ask your child what they are doing in math these days.

“Walk to Read” is on the move. On Monday, December 12, reading groups will be changing teachers. The students who came to me will go to Debbie Vigna, the students who went to Debbie, will go to Jeff Rood, and the students who went to Jeff will come to me. We will talk to the students about the change on Friday, December 9, 2011.

These next three weeks can get crazy. It has been my experience that as much as we can stay on a routine, it helps the children stay focused on learning. Keeping routines at home will help as well.

Please remember to dress your child for the weather, as we have been having outdoor recess even in rain!

Thanks so much for all of your support.

November 1, 2011

Dear Parents,

Welcome to November!  Please make sure you have signed up for a parent/teacher conference!  We look forward to visiting with each of you and discussing your child’s progress.

Next week, November 8th, we will not be having “Walk to Read” due to the short week and we will not be sending homework home either. Your child will still have a Passport Check Day this month so be sure to study your map! Junior Great Book groups will still need to read their next story.

The following week, we will be having a weather class with OMSI!  Each class will have a one hour session with the creative scientists from OMSI!

See you in a few weeks for parent/teacher conferences!
