Curriculum Focus
October 21, 2011
Dear Third Grade Families,
Last week, the third grade team began using a Walk to Read model for a portion of students’ reading instruction. Students receive whole group instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays and Walk to Read Wednesdays through Fridays.
Fall assessment data was used to determine student placements in Walk to Read groups. As the year progresses, some adjustments will be made. However, be mindful that growth occurs in each Walk to Read group so that each child’s unique, individual potential will be met.
Instruction and curriculum is differentiated in each classroom. A range of abilities and learning styles exist within each classroom and teachers are adjusting curriculum and developing strategies to meet the needs of each learner.
During Walk to Read, teachers introduce skills and strategies reflected in our Scott-
Foresman Language Arts adoption, Reading Street. In addition, students will be working in novel groups, small groups, completing independent projects and setting personal reading goals.
We are excited to work with this fantastic group of third graders and appreciate the support they receive at home.
Best regards,
Helen Crandell
