NOTE: We will start the year with unit D (energy) and then progress through E, F, A, B and finish they year with unit C (water).

MATERIALS:

Every day the students will need to bring:

1.        GDTB notebook (a spiral notebook)

2.        science journal (PPS will provide each student with one science journal)

3.        folder (a place to keep loose papers organized)

4.        writing utensil (pencil or pen)

5.        HELPFUL ITEM: scissor and glue stick (we will frequently cutout information and adhere it to the science journal)

GRADING:

Students will be graded in this class based on: participation, assessment scores, GDTB notebooks, written responses, lab scores, science journal completion/organization, projects, etc.

WORK SUBMISSION:

A majority of the graded assignments are in-class assignments.  It is crucial for students to work/write in their science journal.  Many written assignments will be checked in the journal (they should not be torn out and turned in).  Worksheets need to be turned into the proper inbox.  Occasionally, students will need to finish assignments at home and turn in the work the next day.  WORK IS DUE AT THE START OF CLASS.  It is the student’s responsibility to check the “assignment list” posted in the back of the room to make sure they have completed all graded work.  If a student is absent, he/she needs to talk with Mr. N. to determine what work needs to be completed.  This may require coming in at lunch to complete a lab activity.

LATE WORK:

When students are absent, they are provided with one day, for every day absent, to make up work.  In the case of extended absences, please discuss making up work with Mr. N. before leaving.  Worksheets that are late receive a 10% deduction.  Worksheets more than 7 days late will not be graded and will receive an F (50%) in the grade book.  An explanation for why missing assignements receive 50% can be found here.  Stamps in notebooks receive a 50% deduction when late, NOT a 10% deduction.

Introduction

Dear Laurelhurst families,

I am pleased to be your child’s 7th/8th grade physical science teacher.  I hope the summer months were rejuvenating and everybody is ready for the upcoming school year.

It is exciting to be returning to the Laurelhurst community this year.  Last year I learned from the students here and I am ready to jump back into a productive year.  My previous role was as a middle school teacher in the Portland Public Schools’ (PPS) Redirection Program.  I worked in this capacity for a couple years.  Prior to working for PPS, I worked in Beaverton as a high school science teacher, in Oakland, CA as a 7th and 8th grade life and physical science teacher, and in Aurora, CO as a 6th grade science and social studies teacher.  Relocating to new schools has taught me a lot about the teaching profession as I learn from the many educators I have collaborated with.  Continuing my own education is important for me as I progress though this year.  I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Earth Science from Michigan State University and in December I will receive a Masters in Special Education from St. Joseph’s University.

The first week of school is an important time for the students to get to know my classroom expectations, and for me to get to know about the many personalities and perspectives of the students.  We have already started to work together to create an efficient, productive, and caring science classroom.

The start of the year is also an important time to gather information from parents and families.  If you have any insight about your child that will help me as we work together, please do not hesitate to share.  As the year progresses and questions arise, please do not hesitate to ask.  I encourage you to ‘check in’ as often as you like.  I correspond quickest through email, but welcome any form of communication.

The students will be working on many different types of projects and assignments this year.  One of my goals is to provide an environment that allows students to learn through many different modalities.  PPS has adopted a new middle school science curriculum with a heavy focus on lab activities.  You will learn more about the details of this curriculum as the year progress.  Your child spends 54 minutes a day in our class, and I try to make sure this time is as productive as possible.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to meeting you.
