Important Information

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Winter weather is on the way. Although rare, it is sometimes necessary to close school or delay the opening of school due to the unsafe weather conditions. In making the decision if schools should remain open or closed, first consideration is given to student and staff safety, while keeping in mind the importance of attendance and learning.

Before the school district makes the decision, local meteorologists, transportation officials, regional school districts, and traffic safety experts are consulted. The school district will attempt to make the decision as early as possible and communicate it quickly to the media and our website. Sometimes it will be possible to make the decision the night before, but often this decision cannot be made until early in the morning. The Student Transportation Department will be distributing the Alternate Emergency Snow Route Stops booklet to students who ride the bus. Please refer to this book when we announce through the media and our website that Portland Public Schools’ buses will be on snow routes.

In the rare event PPS calls a 2 hour late opening on a day your school has a scheduled late opening, school will start 2 hours later than your normal bell time – not 2 hours later than your late opening time. For example if your normal bell time is 8:00 AM, your scheduled late start time is 10:00 AM, and the district calls a 2 hour late opening due to inclement weather school will start at 10:00 AM.

As a general rule PPS will not close schools early. The chances of children arriving home early without parental supervision or the ability to gain entry clearly presents concerns when poor weather conditions are forecasted. All of our schools are capable of providing shelter in place until the end of the school day. As always, parents have the individual choice of picking up their child prior to the end of the school day.

Sometime in November the Snow Books will be distributed to students that ride school buses.

Local radio and television stations will broadcast closure and late opening information. You can also check for updates on the District’s website at http://www.pps.k12.or.us or local media websites. Families will be notified via the Rapid Broadcast System. New this year, the district has set up a Twitter feed to relay closure, delay and emergency information at no cost. You may sign up to receive the free alerts at www.twitter.com. Simply search PPSAlerts and click “follow”. If you don’t already have one, you will need to set up a Twitter account.

Membership--Become a member! Write a check for $10 to the King School PTA and mail it to 4906 NE 6th, Portland, OR 97211 or drop it off in an envelope at the school's or PTA office. Cash is also accepted. Make sure to include your name, telephone number, address and email address. Thank you! Your membership is important. Our goal for membership this year is 50. We have subsidies available for those who wish to participate but cannot afford the dues.

About PTA Meetings We meet at 5:00 for free dinner and conversation on the second Thursday of each month (except when rescheduled--check the calendar on the main page) in the school library. Translation services, childcare and food will be provided.

What the PTA Does

The King School PTA raised thousands of dollars last year to pay for school improvements and encourage and broaden PTA involvement. $0 $0The PTA improved communications and the appearance of the school by painting the dumpsters, planting in bare areas, and erecting two new reader board signs. Monthly mini-grants were awarded to teachers and school staff to provide for classroom supplies and equipment. Thanks to a grant from the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, the PTA was able to build a garden shed in the courtyard, purchase planting barrels, garden tools and supplies. The development of the courtyard and school surroundings is an ongoing project.$0 $0Each year has seen a increase in volunteering and parental participation.

Committees

The PTA is active with the Site Council to improve school achievement, working to organize Parent Nights and increase parent involvement, and to do outreach to the community and recruit new families to King School. If you want to volunteer or you or someone you know has questions about King, contact us and we will put you in touch with the right person.

If you have specific interest or strengths in the following areas, please feel free to be a part of one or more of these committees:

Event Planning - Plan and oversee PTA events and the timeline for events as they approach.

Auction - Help plan the party of the year! King will hold its first auction this year so that the PTA can better support the IB program, field trips, afterschool activities and the expansion of the garden.

Fundraising - Find new ways to fundraise throughout the year and maximize the fundraising for our annual signature fundraising efforts.

Welcoming - Make sure member interest is followed up on personally. Walk new members through the PTA’s goals for the year, explain the role of committees, and identify how they would like to serve.
Parent/Community Outreach - Network with parents, businesses and organizations in the community to bring resources to King School and build new partnerships.

Grant Writing - Find creative avenues to leverage additional money. Stay current on grant opportunities and keep PTA informed.

Nutrition - Research and initiate changes to our students’ nutrition program. Offer educational information on healthy lifestyles and eating habits.

Exterior/Interior/Décor Maintenance - Stay on top of appearance of the school, keep flowers/trees watered, beds planted with seasonal flowers, keep weeds pulled. Create a schedule to water plants, and walk the halls to assist with keeping the halls decorated.

Grade Level Liaisons/Teacher Appreciation and Support-Each committee member is assigned to a few grade levels to maintain constant communication between parents and teachers. The committee will also serve to support teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day.

Volunteer Coordinator– Solicit an ongoing list of volunteers and create a database. Coordinate them with tasks matching their skills.

PTA Clothes Closet

For a full range of used and new clothing for those in need, the district-wide PTA clothing closet is located at Marshall High School, 3905 SE 91st St., Room C-56, Portland, OR 97266. Clothing center hours: Monday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (school days.) The King PTA needs 4-5 volunteers to help out on October 3rd and April 19th from 9:30-1:30 at Marshall High School. Contact us if you can help.
