Maura Cote

Dear Families of Students in Room 102,

I would like to welcome you and your child to my homepage! My name is Maura Cote and I teach first grade.  This is my fourth year at Kelly. I feel so fortunate to be working at such an amazing school. I want our classroom to be a place where every child feels comfortable and supported so that they can all learn. I am committed to providing my students with all the support, respect, and attention that I can offer. First grade is a very important year when students further develop their reading, writing and math skills. I believe that the family is a child's first and often best teacher. I hope that we can work together this year to help your child LEARN. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me before or after school, in person or by phone (extension 71822).

Homework

Homework folders will be given to students on Friday. In addition there will be handouts from the office. All homework should be turned in on Thursday. Students are also expected to read every night for at least  20 minutes.  Please help your child complete the monthly reading log. They can read anything such as books sent home, morning message, daily news, poems, scholastic newspapers, library books and books from home. Record the title of the books for that day. Return the reading log at the end of each month. As an incentive, students will receive a Pizza Hut certificate each month that the log is completed and returned. In addition to the packet, bi-monthly I will attach a spelling list of ten words to practice. Students should also practice their math fact cards.

If your child cannot do or finish the homework, please contact me to let me know. Otherwise, students who fail to bring back homework on Friday, will complete it in our classroom during choice time. Let's work together!

Classroom Behavior

I use an Awareness Color Chart to help children remember the rules at school. We have three rules for everywhere at Kelly- in the classroom, on the playground or in the halls and cafeteria.

Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be responsible

If your child follows all three rules they will bring home a "green card." This is a way to let you know that they remembered our rules. Please praise them and let them know you are proud of them! A "yellow card" means they needed a few reminders during the day. Please sign and return the card the following day. A "red card" means that they had several reminders and still did not follow the three rules. If your child receives a red card, I would like to talk to you in person, on the phone, note or email so we can think of a way to help your child be successful at school.

Please ask your child to show you their card every day so you can see what color they have. It is also a good opportunity to ask them about the day and what they learned at school.
