January has been a busy month here at Kelly.  We held a family reading night which attracted more than 150 families, started our after school program with great SUN classes and tutoring for students in grades 3-5, and continued our OAKS and DIBELS assessments which are so important to guide our instruction.  We also continued the work of our climate committee to improve student discipline, our communication with plarents, and our recognition of students for positive behavior here at Kelly.

First, a big thank you to our SUN team:  Christine, Aurora and Cristina for assisting with our parent nights and ensuring that our students receive a chance to complete their homework and receive tutoring after school.  We have students receiving help in math on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and a large number of students Monday through Thursday completing their homework and their 20/20 reading logs.  We appreciate our parents keeping track of what kids need to do each day to prepare for their instruction, and "signing off" on student planners to let teachers know that they have seen what the expectation is each day.  All of these supports help our kids become students and improve their study skills.  During our family reading night, parents were able to attend two different sessions about how to help their kids with reading.  Also thanks to our Kelly vertical team in reading:  Annette Culbertson, Sean Day, Rachael Bradley, Lucia Anderson, Laurie Schneider, Lois Schroeder, Annette Myfedov, Tony Bertrand, and Chris Ketel, for planning the family reading night. Look for family writing night in April.

Next, our Kelly climate committee has been meeting monthly to work on a "ladder" of consequence for students who have difficulty following our school rules.  Rules are developed in classrooms, and we have a system of referrals so parents know when students misbehave.  This committee has also been working on ways to positively reward students (our "Paws-i-tive" success recognition starting in the month of February) and on ways to help parents (Love and Logic training).  A parent night will be held in March to further discuss the work of this committee.

I hope you are enjoying our more mild weather and having time as a family to experience the biking, hiking and playing that we love when the sun shines.  Thanks for all of your volunteering at our school, and for your partnership with us.
