JHS - MCAS students can earn credit for college courses they take at PCC and receive high school credit for certain classes. All classes are free to the student and family, paid by Portland Public Schools while the student is enrolled at JHS-MCAS. All 2015 graduating students will be required to take at least 12 community college credits in order to graduate with a diploma from Jefferson High School – Middle College for Advanced Studies.

Most students will primarily access middle college during their junior and senior years. Students will be screened periodically throughout their sophomore year. If the student is recommended for or is interested in starting prior to their junior year, they would need to complete an Early Admissions Application (see Appendix A). Freshmen will have to complete their first year at Jefferson before being allowed to take classes at PCC.

Accessing PCC:
• Freshmen who believe are ready to start taking classes at the end of their freshman year may complete the Early Admission application (see Appendix A) it will be due April 1st. If the preliminary application is approved, students will need to take the COMPASS placement exam in the spring during the second week of May. If scores are high enough (placement into WR121, MTH 60, and no reading required) students will be able to take classes during the summer term.
• Sophomores have two opportunities to complete the Early Admissions Application (see Appendix A). The first one is October 15th in order to take classes during winter term and the second one is January 15th in order to take classes during spring term.
• All sophomores will be taking the COMPASS at the end of their sophomore year.

Registration at Cascade Campus

Your point of contact at Cascade Campus is Damon Hickok, Middle College Coordinator. His office is in the Middle College Office at Student Services Building, Room 207. Phone 971-722-5551. Your high school counselor will put you in contact with Mr. Hickok at the appropriate time.

Step 1
• Mr. Hickok will assist you with the PCC application and testing process and you will get your ID number.
• Bring photo ID

The placement test used at PCC is called the COMPASS. It measures the student’s current skill level and helps determine whether students are currently ready for college level coursework, depending on their reading, writing and math scores.

Dropping Classes
You MUST have Mr. Hickok’s approval in order to drop any classes. If you drop any classes without approval you will be put on Academic Probation.
