Hosford Technology
Hosford Middle School offers students the best of three leading technology platforms; Windows, Linux & Mac. Each platform represented with its own lab room dedicated for educational purposes.
Windows Lab Room 20
In 2010, Hosford received several computers donated through FreeGeek and these computers were used to create our Windows lab in room 20. Each of these machines loaded Windows XP and a software suite designed for use in education. The windows lab is our primary computer education source where students learn the fundamentals of keyboarding, creating varied documents and how to navigate the web. Creativity is inspired with our Lego Technology course and advanced computer technology classes prepare students for more in depth computer training.
Mac Language Lab Room 126
A grant received by Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission, provided funds to create Hosford’s unique Mac Language Lab (Room 126). The lab was completed in 2010 and is dedicated to ESL and immersion courses at Hosford. With all iMac computers, this lab is the foundation for several new opportunities in advanced computer skills including audio/video production, telecommunications and presentations. Each iMac computer comes with our PPS Leopard image including the standard iLife software and Microsoft Office suite.
Linux Lab Room 206
Completed in 2004. The IT Department implemented the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP). The purpose of the project is to upgrade the Linux systems with new software and open office programs. Hosford's linux lab is primarily used for OAKS standardized testing. Besides the linux lab being used for several secondary testing purposes, the staff also checks the lab out for research, writing and other projects. The lab is also available for students to drop in during recesstime for educational purposes.
Other Software
At Hosford we are fortunate to have access to other education-based software that students need to further enhance their learning. Programs not already listed include: iWork, iLife, Microsoft Office Suite, OpenOffice, etc. A few additional specialized programs students like to use include Google Earth, Inspiration 9, Comic Life, GarageBand, iMovie and Rosetta Stone.
Media
Hosford is also proud to have access to media tools including consumer level video and still cameras. These cameras include Flip cameras and Nikon point-and-shoot style cameras received through grant funding. Available equipment can be found here.
Classroom Technology Tools
Starting in December 2010 each classroom is equipped with the standard tech bundle. This gives each teacher a projector, document camera, speakers, laptop and cart. More information can be found here.
Instructional Technology Assistant
Luke Wisher, our ITA, is responsible for maintaining all of the technology equipment located at Hosford Middle School. He is the general go-to person for all technology troubleshooting and advice at Hosford. Luke also maintains the Hosford website, administrates tests and provides technology professional development to all Hosford staff. Our ability to fund an ITA, supported by grants and Foundation fundraisers, allows Hosford to strive to constantly improve the integration of technology into the curriculum and computer skill instruction for students.
