Hosford Middle School

Hosford has a diverse ELL (English Language Learners)  population, and students are grouped according to their level of English proficiency. In ESL (English as a Second Language), we focus on improving students' English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The curriculum for the ESL program is based on the state's English Language Development Standards, which follow a continuum of language functions and forms. We use  Shining Star, a Pearson Longman publication, which was recently adopted by PPS. Shining Star is a leveled, theme based, integrated curriculum that provides students with a balanced approach to learning English through authentic literature, informational readings and systematic skill instruction. It is a research-based program that links explicit reading and writing instruction to specific grammar forms and vocabulary development.
