Hosford Grants

Target Foundation Grant

The awarded grant was for $700 to cover field trip related costs for students.

The grant went toward paying for a school-wide field trip for all students to go to OMSI to view two exhibits. The "Design Zone" exhibit illustrates how math and algebraic principles underlay many of the things we see and do in life: art, music, design, bicycles, video games and many other aspects of life. The exhibit is full of hands-on immersion activities where students manipulate parts of an exhibit and watch the outcomes.

The other exhibit is the "Lost Egypt" exhibit, on temporary exhibit from another science center. This exhibit reveals how archaeologists use modern science to understand the ancient Egyptian culture and to further study the significance of the artifacts and remminants we can see today.

MHCRC Grant

Hosford Middle School is the proud recipient of a $123,000 Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission (MHCRC) grant.  The 3-year grant primarily supports Hosford’s immersion and elective foreign language classes, and the ESL program.  Secondarily, it supports all students’ writing curriculum at Hosford.

The grant provides funds geared towards:

  • Improving access to 21st Century computer technology for all students and staff.
  • Increasing immersion opportunities and second language students’ language skills.
  • Fostering communication and collaboration with Hosford’s sister school in China.
  • Accelerating ESL students’ English language acquisition.
  • Improving writing instruction for all Hosford students.
  • Enhancing computer technology training for staff.

Monies from the grant have allowed Hosford to create a dedicated language lab in room 126 and a remodel of the shop class to create space for a second computer lab where general computer classes are taught.

With grant money Hosford was able to purchase:

  • 32 iMac computers
  • 2 20-laptop mobile carts
  • 10 document cameras and projectors
  • 1 77” Interactive whiteboard
  • Site license for Rosetta Stone language learning software
  • 60 headsets to be used with Rosetta Stone
  • 5 flip cameras and 1 HD video camera
  • 5 Nikon still cameras
  • 5 audio recorders

A condition of the MHCRC grant is that the computers provided by the grant are never to be used for standardized testing.  As a result, this grant allows computer and language learning to continue year-round at Hosford, as computers were previously unavailable for student education approximately 4 months of the year due to standardized testing.

Vision Into Action Grant

African Girls Basketball Team – $4,599
The African Girls Basketball Team will build athletic and communication skills for girls who were born and raised in Kenya and Somalia and now attend Hosford Middle School. The program will help to bridge the social chasm that exists between this immigrant population and others students attending Hosford Middle School. The typical basketball uniform will be modified to conform to the girls' Muslim beliefs, allowing the girls to maintain pride in their cultural and religious heritage while participating in this mainstream activity.

Climate Change Camera Grant

The camera grant is called the Facing the Future Camera Grant. Facing the Future is a Seattle-based nonprofit that provides education (including some free curricula) re climate change.

We also are beneficiaries of a schoolyard storm water project. Lower Columbia Region Estuary Partnership is the recipient of a Community Benefit Opportunity Grant under the City of Portland's Eastside Bigpipe Project (the new huge sewer lines being built to accommodate combined sewer overflows). The grant is to build two school storm water gardens. We're one of the schools. The garden will be just west of the north wing. The trees will be moved. The garden will get some of its water from the roof of the north wing. That water will be diverted from the storm water system to the garden.

Girl Go Girl! Grant

Hosford Middle school is the recipient of a $2,940 GoGirlGo! Grant, awarded by the Women's Sports Foundation. This grant is dedicated to the development and funding of girls' sport/physical activity programs that combine athletic instruction and programming with the delivery of educational information by qualified adults aimed at reducing risk behaviors that threaten the health and social advancement of girls ages 8-13. The grant at Hosford will support the African Girls' Basketball program and will be used in conjunction with the GoGirlGo! education curriculum.
