The school year has begun and I want to thank you for a
smooth start to the year. We never
know how the first day will turn out, but I was happy with
how quickly we got students started
and into classes.
As I am sure you have heard, we had a fire early Tuesday
morning. The alarm sounded at
2:30 am and the Portland Fire Department was able to contain
it to one room. The fire was
caused by an electrical issue that has been resolved.
I wanted to send you a short letter to update you on the
events of this week and to let you
know the plans for moving forward.
The school district has responded quickly, and is cleaning
and refurbishing the room along
with cleaning smoke from the halls and adjoining rooms
around the clock. They will continue
their work until we are back to normal.
Because of the repairs needed, we have relocated Ms.
DaRosa’s and Ms. Hass’ fourth grade
classes to rooms above the Art Room. Some of the other rooms
along the west hall have
some lingering smoke odor, so for today and tomorrow, we
have moved Ms. Lumbard and
Ms. McCormick to alternate rooms.
Although this is not the way we wanted to start the year, we
are grateful that we had no
injuries and only one classroom was significantly damaged.
This is a reminder for us to be
vigilant about practicing our fire drills and emphasizing
safety with our students. We will hold
one fire drill per week during the month of September and
one per month after that.
I will continue to keep you informed as the work on the
classrooms progresses. Please give
me a call if you have questions or concerns.
