Class announcements
Nov 29, 2011
Dear Families,
I am just touching base now that I am back in the classroom.
Remember homework is due on Thursdays, even though I didn’t manage to change the papers for the essays. Thursday-to-Thursday gives families with busy weeknight schedules a chance to work on the weekends. Also know that in addition to regular weekly assignments I will occasionally send home handwriting or math games. This week I did send home a math game to play. It went home on Monday and can be turned in next week.
I am not sending home reading homework, but studies have shown third graders should read 20-30 minutes every night in order to stay at grade level. In order to be above grade level they need to read even more each day.
In the past I posted homework and class updates on my district issued website along with paper copies sent home with the kids. I am working on getting that website up and running again. The address is below.
I learned that we have a few students with lice. Please help me by talking to your student about keeping a healthy distance from other students. This means less hugging, and sharing of clothes, or other behaviors that could allow the lice to spread. For the past several weeks there has been information about lice prevention and how to kill lice in the Thursday Announcements. Also, the PTA has been putting information on their website on a variety of ways to deal with lice.
Our fish tank is getting the water treated and our tree frog is coming back next week. I have set up the aquarium and terrarium out of my own money. This year I am asking for financial help to maintain both set ups. I’ll need to buy food for both, and I’ll have to replace fish and filter supplies to get the tank back to a healthy balance. I have put a jar on my desk and have told the kids they are welcome to donate spare change to the cause. I have also asked them to talk to their families before they bring any money to school.
For some up coming art projects we will need cardboard from cereal boxes (or similar thickness). If you have any please send them in with the students. I will be cutting them to the right size in preparation for the project. I will wait until we have enough before starting the project. We are getting close!
Also, in the spring I would like to make small individual terrariums with the kids. In order to do this I will need to have 2 clear 2 liter bottles per student. Please look around at home and work to see if you can bring any clear 2 liter bottles. Last year only one bottle came in, so I was unable to do this science unit. Please keep this in mind as you celebrate the holidays, it is a great time to gather 2 liter bottles. Please rinse them out before bringing them in.
Please feel free to call, write, or stop by with any questions, comments, or concerns you have.
