Readers Mountain

We have great readers at Glencoe. How great you ask? Between 2001 and 2010 they have read collectively over 1 million pages each year. Progress is tracked on the Readers' Mountain bulletin board in the main hallway. Trains leave their station and ascend the mountain as they read towards 25,000 pages to reach the summit. Once there, they turn around and begin the trek back to their train station. There is no limit to the amount of times they can make round trips. If the school reaches their goal by the end of the year, Librarian Ms. Emma has something in store for them on the last day of school. Thanks to the great help of parent volunteers who keep the tallies updated, our students always know the progress they are making. The goal for the first few years was 1,000,000 pages. The kids flew by that goal! For the next 3 years, the goal was 1.5 million pages and they made it every year! Then Ms. Emma decided to up the total because the students were far surpassing their goal. The new goal was 1,750,000 pages; she really doesn't like dressing up in "Duck" colors on the last day of school! Unfortunately for her, the students out did themselves again and read a total of 1,848,932 pages for the school year 2008-2009. Again the total was increased to 2,000,000 pages and they did it again, so she had to do the "green and yellow thing" once again. It's time for a new program!!!
