Homework Planner Expectations

Dear Families,                                  September 17, 2007

This is your student’s homework binder. It is to go home with your child every day except Friday. Your child is to share and discuss their homework with you and have you sign the homework folder every day. The purpose of this folder is to help students learn good homework habits. In addition, the homework folder will keep you informed of what we are learning in school and upcoming events.

Please review the homework nightlyl with your child and sign at the bottom of each day’s recording of assignments.

You can assist your child by setting a specific time and place for homework to be done. Also, your expectations for homework to be done neatly, accurately and on time will add to your child’s success. In fifth grade the amount of time spent on homework daily should be approximately 50 minutes.

All homework and due dates are written in the homework folder at the end of the day. Unfinished classroom work becomes homework due the next morning. As long as class time is used well, this should not occur often. Several times during the year there will be long-term projects that will require homework time and your help in managing time with extended due dates.

Math - Nightly practice of multiplication and division facts for 5 minutes. Fifth graders should have facts through 12 x 12 mastered. Knowing these facts is key for being successful in learning new math concepts. Math practice sheets will be homework throughout the week.
Word Study - The students have 5 new words each week that are based on the high frequency word list. There will be weekly tests - look for corrected tests on Mondays. Words missed become their priority words to study nightly for 5-10 minutes. There is a word study homework sheet each week. Handed out Monday and due Wednesday.
Reading - Ideally your child should be reading 30 minutes daily outside of school. A minimum of 20 minutes daily is required. Students are to write the title of the book, magazine or newspaper they read and the amount of time and pages read. There is a reading homework sheet each week for you to read and discuss with your child. Handed out Tuesday and due Thursday. There is a Reading Log in their homework binders to keep track of books read.
Geography - Handed out Monday and due Thursday.

Thank you for your support in reviewing your child’s homework and homework folder daily, and for establishing a time and place for homework to be done daily. You are an integral part of your child’s success in school.
